Efate ( French Efate , including: Île Vate , formerly: Sandwich Iceland ) is to the New Hebrides scoring island province Shefa of the Pacific island state of Vanuatu . Efate received its former name " Sandwich Island" from the British explorer James Cook .
With around 50,000 inhabitants, Éfaté is the most populous and with almost 900 km² the third largest island in Vanuatu. The highest point, Mount McDonald, is 647 m. Most of Éfaté's residents now live in Port Vila , the capital of Vanuatu.
Prehistoric traces can be found in the Lapita cemetery Teouma .
During the Second World War , the island served as the United States military base .
In the northwest of the island is Chief Roi Mata's Domain , which was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008 . The Lololima is one of the rivers .
