Ümit Birol (born January 26, 1963 in Samsun ) is a former Turkish football player and coach.

Player career

society

Birol started club football in his hometown of Samsun in the youth of Samsunspor . In 1981 he was accepted into the professional squad of the then second division team and made the leap into the starting eleven right away. At the end of his first season, the 1981/82 season , he and his team celebrated the championship of the 2nd Lig and thus direct promotion to the 1st Lig . Raised to the 1st Lig failed here in the first season of relegation so that in the summer of 1983 they were relegated to the 2nd Lig. Birol remained loyal to his club after relegation and went into the 2nd league.

After Samsunspor failed in the first second division season after relegation, the direct resurgence, several clubs tried to Birol. The then second division Adanaspor , who had been relegated to the second league in the summer of 1984 after fourteen years of membership in the first division and wanted to achieve direct promotion, reacted the fastest and signed Birol for the 1984/85 season. Birol immediately established himself in the regular eleven. At the end of the season they missed direct re-promotion with the 5th place in the table. After the promotion failed in the second season with the second place in the table, Birol left the team and switched to the reigning second division champion and new first division team Antalyaspor . At Antalyaspor, too, he immediately found a place in the regular formation and was nominated for the national team's Olympic selection due to his convincing performance at this club. Antalyaspor missed relegation at the end of the season and rose after a year 1st Lig again. Birol went with the team in the 2nd league and played here for a season.

Since Antalyaspor missed the direct resurgence in the summer of 1987, Birol left the club and switched to the reigning second division champion and new first division side Adana Demirspor . For this club he only played one season and then moved within the league to Altay Izmir . With this club he experienced his most successful season to date. He scored six goals in 19 league games. Since this club missed relegation at the end of the season, he rose with Altay in the 2nd Lig. At the end of the second division season in 1990/91 he celebrated the second division championship with his team and thus direct promotion to the first league. Birol was one of the top performers of his club and had a large share in the rise.

Due to his convincing performance at Altay, several first division clubs became aware of him. In the summer of 1991, he moved to the traditional Istanbul club Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Birol's previous traditional position was that of the right winger . He was particularly successful in this position at his last club Altay. Since his new club Fenerbahçe in the forward positions with Rıdvan Dilmen , Aykut Kocaman and Tanju Çolak had almost all Turkish international strikers in the squad, Birol was used by coach Jozef Vengloš in the right midfield. In this position, Birol was able to convince straight away, and together with Oğuz Çetin, he became the top template for Fenerbahçes strikers and rose to the national team. He was also one of the best scorers of the 1991/92 season thanks to his many assists. The season ended his club as runner-up and remained without a title in the other competitions. In his second season with Fenerbahçe, he lost his regular place at the beginning of the season, but regained his regular place at the end of the season. For the season 1993/94 Fenerbahçe hired the German coach Holger Osieck . After the pre-season camp he assessed the squad and sorted out some players, including Birol.

Issued for sale by Fenerbahçe, several top division clubs tried to get Birol to sign. Kocaelispor , one of the financially strongest clubs in Turkish football at the time, reacted the quickest and signed a two-year contract with Birol. The transfer fee paid to Fenerbahçe was 5,000,000,000 Turkish Lira . At Kocaelispor he made it into the starting line-up straight away and was quickly one of the top performers on his team. In the second season he also started as a regular player, but was surprisingly sold to the second division club Çanakkale Dardanelspor in October 1994 . For Dardanelspor he played one and a half seasons and was loaned to the first division club Eskişehirspor for the second half of the 1995/96 season.

In the summer of 1996 he moved to his old club on a free transfer and in the meantime in the 2nd Lig playing club Adana Demirspor . For this club he played a season and then moved as an amateur player to the Istanbul amateur club Yıldırım Bosnaspor . After a year for this club, he ended his active football career.

National team

Birol was nominated in the squad of the Turkish Olympic team on the occasion of the participation in the Mediterranean Games in 1987 . In this tournament they made it to the semi-finals and were eliminated here with a 0-1 defeat against the French Olympic team. In the game for third place they beat Greece 1-0 and became bronze medalists. Birol was used in all of his team's games.

Due to his shown performances at Fenerbahçe Istanbul , Birol was nominated by the then national coach Yılmaz Gökdel as part of a test match against Bulgaria in the squad of the Turkish national team . In this game he made his international debut.

For the qualifying match for the European Championship in 1992 against the English national team , he was appointed to the squad for the last time, but was on the bench during this game.

Coaching career

Immediately after his football playing career, he began his coaching career. His first job was to take on the position of assistant trainer at Erzurumspor in the summer of 1992 . From January 2006 he worked as an assistant coach at his old club Altay Izmir . After the head coach was dismissed in mid-April 2006, Birol took over the post of head coach until the end of the season. With his team he made it to the final of the play-offs of the TFF 1. Lig and missed promotion to the Süper Lig after a 1: 4 final defeat against Sakaryaspor .

In the following years he worked mainly as head coach and mostly looked after clubs in the TFF 2nd Lig and TFF 3rd Lig .
