history

The original Ōita Stadium was built for the 2002 World Cup and opened in May 2001. It was designed by the well-known architect Kishō Kurokawa . As of March 1, 2006, it was called Kyūshū Sekiyu Dome , after a mineral oil company. In 2010 Ōita Bank became a name sponsor and was called Ōita Bank Dome . In 2019 it was renamed Showa Denko Dome Oita , after the Japanese chemical company Shōwa Denkō K.K.

A special feature of the stadium is the closable roof of the dome, which has a total diameter of 245 meters. The movable roof structure consists of a steel frame provided with a light-permeable PTFE - membrane is coated. Opening or closing the roof takes 20 minutes. Initially it offered space for 43,000 spectators. However, after the end of the World Cup in 2002, the front half of the movable rows of seats was removed from the stadium. The maximum number of seats today is 40,000, of which 34,000 are permanently installed and 6,000 are mobile seats in the first rows.
