(23238) Ocasio-Cortez is in the inner main belt situated asteroid that on 20 November 2000 at the Lincoln Laboratory Experimental Test System ( IAU code 704) in Socorro , New Mexico within the project Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research discovered (LINEAR) has been. The asteroid had already been sighted on October 31 and November 1, 1992 under the provisional designation 1992 UB 9 at the Karl Schwarzschild Observatory in Tautenburg .

The asteroid belongs to the Vesta family , a large group of asteroids named after (4) Vesta , the second largest asteroid and third largest celestial body in the main belt. The ageless (not osculating ) orbital elements of (23238) Ocasio-Cortez are almost identical with those of six smaller (when one of the absolute brightness emanates) asteroid: (102639) 1999 VV 38 , (119,638) 2001 XG 24 , (272,155) 2005 NS 69 , (299036) 2005 AV 52 , (319813) 2006 VE 61 and 2008 TO 140 .

The diameter of the asteroid was roughly calculated to be 2.322 km (± 0.635), the albedo as 0.156 (± 0.072).

According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic study by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel subdivided all investigated asteroids into C, S and V types (23238) Ocasio -Cortez assigned to the S asteroids .

designation

(23238) Ocasio-Cortez was named on August 28, 2007 after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (* 1989), who was then a student at Yorktown High School in Yorktown Heights in Westchester County , New York state . At the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2007, she took second place in the microbiology category for her project on the effect of antioxidants on the life expectancy of roundworms using Caenorhabditis elegans as an example . As a prize for her second place, she was awarded $ 1,500 and an asteroid named after her. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is now a member of the United States House of Representatives .
