(8421) Montanari is an asteroid of the main outer belt discovered on December 2, 1996 at the San Vittore Observatory ( IAU code 552) in Bologna . Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had already taken place: on October 22nd and 24th, 1976 with the provisional designation 1976 UX 9 at the Japanese Kiso Observatory and on October 25 and 26, 1981 (1981 UA 26 ) at the Palomar Observatory in California .
The asteroid is a member of the Koronis family, a group of asteroids named after (158) Koronis . The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (8421) Montanari are almost identical to those of seven smaller ones, if one considers the absolute brightness of 14.7, 15.0, 15.5, 16.3, 16.8, 16, 2 and 16.8 compared to 13.5, asteroids: (43549) 2001 FN 16 , (63785) 2001 RM 11 , (144910) 2005 AX 15 , (206727) 2004 BE 78 , (263579) 2008 FR 88 , (278772 ) 2008 SL 156 and (320893) 2008 GP 59 .
The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 5.661 (± 0.210) km .
(8421) Montanari was named on May 4, 1999 after the Italian astronomer Geminiano Montanari (1633–1687). As early as 1935, a lunar crater on the southern front of the moon was named after Geminiano Montanari: lunar crater Montanari .
