The 1977/78 season was the 39th season of the 1st divisjon , the highest Norwegian ice hockey division . Champion became Manglerud Star Ishockey for the second time in the club's history . Lamberseter and Jar IL relegated to the second division.

In the main round, each of the ten teams played a total of 18 games. The six best-placed teams qualified for the final round, the first-placed champions. The other four teams had to compete in the relegation round, the last two of which were relegated to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
