The 1972/73 season was the 34th season of the 1st divisjon , the highest Norwegian ice hockey division . Vålerenga Ishockey became champion for the eleventh time in the club's history . Grüner / Hugin and Lambertseter were relegated to the second division.

In the main round, each of the eight teams played a total of 14 games. The four best-placed teams qualified for the final round, whose first-placed champions became. The other four teams had to compete in the relegation round, the last two of which were relegated to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
