The second division 1985/86 was the 69th season of the second highest Belgian division in men's football . It started in September 1985 and ended in May 1986.

The 16 clubs played against each other twice on a total of 30 match days, divided into a first half and a second half.

The 30 game days were divided into three stages: (1 to 10, 11 to 20 and 21 to 30). The table first and champion rose directly. The second promoted team was determined in a play-off round with four teams. The second in the table and the respective winners of the three stages took part. If the champion, runner-up or another club had won more than one stage, the general ranking was taken.

The teams in the last two ranks were relegated to the third division .
