2030 - Uprising of the Old is a German television film from 2007. The three-part series broadcast in January 2007 was announced by the broadcasting television broadcaster ZDF as a documentary fiction about demographic development or even as a “demographic crime thriller” (according to editor-in-chief Nikolaus Brender ). The three parts have the subtitles "The hostage-taking", "The underground life" and "The secret in the desert". 2030 - Uprising of the old was nominated in the category "Best TV film / multi-part" for the German Television Award , as well as in the category best drama for the Golden Rose of Lucerne and was awarded the Ecran d'Argent de la fiction at the Festival Européen des 4 Ecrans in Paris .

In 2011, ZDF broadcast a sequel to 2030 - Uprising of the Young .

action

A special news broadcast reports on September 12, 2030: The federal government is resigning with reference to the "M-factor affair". This is followed by a review of the events that led to this decision. The young investigative journalist Lena Bach wants to uncover a murderous scandal involving old people. In this fictional future, a third of pensioners live below the poverty line. Many old people have to beg. Since 2015, home care has only been available for the wealthy. Since 2019, "voluntary early death" has been in the service catalog of the health insurance companies outlined .

A desperate pensioner, Sven Darow, had taken the CEO of the wellness group Prolife hostage six months earlier in front of the camera and wants to force him to confess about an M-factor . A hand grenade explodes. By whom and why it was ignited remains unclear. Places of action are also a mass accommodation for impoverished seniors and a bizarre old-age flat share in an abandoned village in Brandenburg . Darow created for an Internet seniors transmitter research about the 30 percent of impoverished age, there is at that time (2027).

Pensioner Darow then joined the "Angry Old Commando" in 2028, who threw silicone cushions and grease bags at strolling affluent seniors during a protest in the spa town of Baden-Baden . Some bank robberies are also said to have been caused by the "angry old men". The journalist meets senior citizens who were able to afford urgently needed operations due to an unexpected financial blessing .

In the meantime, the "elderly problem" has been solved relatively elegantly: More and more elderly people are being lured into cheap homes in Africa using dubious lever methods . But even there, the following applies: if you have no reserves, you can afford accommodation with the basic pension, but not sufficient medical care. Bach finally discovers where the sick and partly " bedridden " seniors are being brought and sneaks out onto the fenced-in area at night.

On the site, she discovers that the sick in huge bed camps in a tent city, fed with fluid hoses and sedated with sedatives from huge tanks, are put into a twilight state and only vegetate to themselves. Bach alerted the authorities, the matter was exposed and made public. The trial in Germany threatens to fail when witnesses are repeatedly killed or "disappeared". After all, a Prolife board member who has fled to Brazil helps . He passes a video to Bach that proves that the seniors were placed in the camps with knowledge and on behalf of the federal government. Because the state can no longer pay the pensions, it has worked with corporations to find a solution to ensure the survival of pensioners with a minimum pension. After a change in the law, the state finally transferred the remainder of the pension for individual pensioners to Prolife, which allegedly guaranteed the pension. After this background is uncovered, the federal government resigns as a whole because it had to bear political responsibility in front of the indignant public.

background

The term "fiction" is used ambiguously by ZDF: facts are deliberately offered in the form of an "exciting story" and at the same time, trends that are already recognizable today are to be continued "seriously" into the future. In this way, ZDF wants to differentiate itself from the genre of the mockumentary (fictional documentary film).

ZDF has brought a sociologist teaching in Giessen , who long before Frank Schirrmacher published a publication on suspected differences between old and young, into the editorial team as a specialist advisor, from whom some of the impulses for this drama fiction should come ( generation conflict ).

In 2004, ZDF broadcast a similar simulation film adaptation / documentary fiction with the question “How well are we prepared for such an emergency?” With Tag X - Terror against Germany . With reference to cybernetics (or bio- cybernetics ) , Frederic Vester called such scenarios, devised based on real contexts, games that practice systemic (“networked”) thinking. However, scenarios developed by him offer different courses for comparison and thus for learning.

In the context of the documentary fiction, ZDF broadcasts additional reports that deal with different aspects of demographic change , for example the Frontal21 reportage Alten-Republik Deutschland , which was broadcast after the first part. The three parts of the film achieved an average market share of 9.4 percent (3.23 million viewers), with the first part achieving the highest rate with 11.8 percent.

The contributions of the scientific discipline gerontology are hardly processed in addition to the changing demographics in the film: for example the image of old age in society, old age policy, health care research at the end of life, multimorbidity and old age syndromes .

Jan Moen (1977) wrote the science fiction Uprising of the Elderly, with a plot that is partly similar.

criticism

Wolf Schmidt von der taz sees in the American film ... the year 2022 ... who want to survive (original title: Soylent Green , 1973) parallels to the problems addressed, but criticizes the alarmism he sees in the new film.

One of the five economics , Bert Rürup , criticized the film because it "does not show a realistic picture of life in Germany in a good twenty years". And the filmmakers ignored the mechanisms of democracy . Rürup warned against using the demographic development as a background for a "fear debate".

Walter Hirrlinger , President of the Social Association VdK , criticized in the “Neue Presse” that the fiction spreads fear, especially among older people. “ My fear is that, in the end, older people in particular will no longer know: what is fiction, what is reality, where should the train go? “ZDF should ask itself whether the film is intended to provoke an uprising among the old.

Others

The mass accommodation scene was filmed in the Berlin Schiller Theater .
