The 3rd division is the third highest division in German handball . Championships are played in four seasons, largely based on geographic aspects, each with 16 teams; the four season champions qualified directly for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga by 2019 .

The 3rd league was introduced as part of a league structure reform of the German Handball Federation (DHB) for the 2010/2011 season and is managed by the DHB. It replaced the five regional leagues that had existed until then , which were organized by the individual regional associations. These were largely dissolved as a result of this reform.

Mode 2019/2020 season

64 teams take part in the 3rd league. The distribution over the four squadrons is based on geographical aspects, not on regional association membership. The division is repeated every year, so individual clubs may change between the relays.

A double round tournament is played in each season .

Two season winners of the 3rd division are promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. They are determined through playoffs of all season winners who are eligible for promotion. In two additional playoffs, the two losers in these playoffs determine the team that, as the third season winner, will play another place in the 2nd Bundesliga 2020/2021 against the third from bottom of the 2nd Bundesliga.

At the end of the season, the teams in the table positions 14, 15 and 16 of each season are relegated. If a club leaves the championship round prematurely, it will be counted towards the number of relegated teams in the respective season and cannot be promoted to the 3rd division in the following round.

At the end of the 2019/2020 season, 12 teams from each of the twelve top division areas will be promoted to the third division.
