Asia
- The death of the 38th Tennō of Japan , Tenji , is succeeded by his son Kōbun as the 39th emperor. Tenji's brother Ōama, who had previously moved to Yoshino , attacks Kōbun with an army and defeats him. Upon hearing of the defeat, Kōbun and his entire family commit suicide. Ōama ascends the throne under the name Temmu as the 40th emperor. Under him, the Kiyomihara Palace becomes the new residence.

Europe
- September 1 : Wamba is elected King of the Visigoths on the anniversary of the death of his predecessor Rekkeswinth , who has no male heir , allegedly against his will. The ruler, who was already elderly at this point in time, received the anointing of the king in the palace church of Toledo on September 19 as a religious ordination. It is the first explicitly documented anointing of a ruler in the Visigoth Empire (and in all of European history). After gaining royal dignity, Wamba first undertook a successful campaign against the rebellious Basques and forced them to take hostages. Immediately after his accession to the throne, however, he was confronted with an uprising in his northern part of the empire, which was supported by the Franks.
