The shipping company has a stake of just under 34.9 percent in the Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei Föhr-Amrum (WDR).

History of the AG Reederei Norden-Frisia

Share over 1000 Marks of AG Reederei Norden-Frisia from June 1st, 1920

In 1797, Norderney was awarded the title of the first German North Sea resort. The journey, however, turned out to be quite difficult and long. Ships only set off from Bremen and Hamburg and reached Norderney, sometimes only after days, only via the island of Helgoland . From 1843, Norderney was also approached from Emden and Leer with large steamboats . The ships that set off from today's Norddeich at that time were only small, uncomfortable sailors whose journey times were dependent on the weather conditions.

In June 1871, 23 men from Norden and Norderney finally decided to "put traffic to the islands of Norderney and Juist on track" and founded the Norden steamship company . This put the first steamship into service in 1872 and had a fortified landing stage built in Norderneyer harbor for the first time. From initial problems, for example the unreliability in winter and the resulting resentment of the Norderneyer population, there was an opportunity for competitors to enter, and so in 1893 the Norderneyer steamship company Unity was founded. The fierce competition was later settled and they worked together.

In 1906 competition flared up again when the new steamship shipping company Frisia started operations. After the liquidation of Norderneyer Dampfschiffsrhederei Einigkeit , the two remaining shipping companies merged in 1909 to form a joint venture and finally merged in 1917 to form the joint stock company Reederei Norden-Frisia .

In 1922 the first engine and machine workshop was acquired and the vehicle fleet expanded. During the Second World War , the ships were confiscated by the Navy and some of them were lost. After the end of the war, the British briefly took over island traffic until the shipping company was able to resume operations in late summer 1945.

Until then, only people were transported; However, many visitors and islanders became more interested in how the British offered to take their motor vehicle with them to the island. This wish was implemented with the help of converted freighters until the first combined passenger car ferry was finally put into service in 1962.

In 1969 the AG Reederei Norden-Frisia started air traffic. One year later it decoupled Frisia Luftverkehrs GmbH as a subsidiary .

In the course of the 1980s, the shipping company had the entire fleet renewed or converted and modernized again in the mid-1990s. With the Frisia IV , the company put a double-ended ferry into service for the first time in April 2002 . This no longer needs to turn in the pier in Norddeich and can go in both directions. On March 11, 2003 the Frisia VIII was transferred to the Coonatramar shipping company in Puntarenas , Costa Rica . It goes there under the name San Lucas II .

Since 1998, AG Reederei Norden-Frisia has been handling the payment of the visitor's tax for every island visitor who uses the ferry crossing from Norddeich-Mole to Norderney for the municipality of Norderney , by combining the ferry ticket with the tourist card (NorderneyCard). This means that it is not possible to visit the island by Frisia ferry - regardless of whether or not you have used spa services - without paying the spa tax. This now also applies to the community of Juist.

In summer 2020, AG-Reederei-Norden-Frisia subsidiary Cassen-Tours GmbH started a scheduled ferry service between Norddeich and the island of Juist with the small high-speed ferry Inselexpress 1 made of aluminum with space for a maximum of eleven passengers.

Frisia-Offshore GmbH

In addition to the core business (ferry connections, island supply , excursion shipping), the shipping company was also involved in the supply of offshore wind farms such as alpha ventus through its subsidiary Frisia-Offshore GmbH . For this purpose, she operated the offshore catamarans Wind Force I and Wind Force II , which were specially built as versatile transport vehicles for people and cargo to offshore wind farms. Furthermore, the Beaufort , the Otto Treplin and the Gode Wind were used. In 2018 this company was merged with the parent company.

In order to improve the supply, in the summer of 2008 along with the WIKING Helikopter Service GmbH , the FRI KING Offshore GmbH founded. The seat of this company is the headquarters of WIKING at Wilhelmshaven-Mariensiel airfield .

In addition there are the ships of the subsidiary Frisia-Offshore GmbH , the Wind Force I , the Wind Force II and the Gode Wind .

The largest ship in the fleet is the Frisia III , which entered service on July 28, 2015 and was built at the Cassens shipyard in Emden, with a length of 74.3 meters and a width of 13.4 meters. It can carry 60 vehicles and around 1500 passengers. As with the Frisia IV , the two chimneys are an external distinguishing feature . Both ships have a Voith Schneider drive for better maneuverability.

The catamaran Cat No. 1 , which had been put into service for Heligoland transport in 1999, was sold to the ferry company Linda Line Express in Tallinn with effect from December 20, 2006 . Since spring 2007 it has been used as a Merilin under the flag of Estonia together with two hydrofoil boats in the liner service between Tallinn and Helsinki . The reason for the sale were excessively high operating costs that could no longer be covered by correspondingly high fares. With the Cat No. 1 , two daily departures from Cuxhaven to Helgoland and further departures from Borkum, Norderney, Langeoog, Sylt and Amrum were initially offered during the season . In 2001 the catamaran switched to the Hooksiel – Helgoland route ; from 2005 onwards he drove from Wilhelmshaven to Helgoland.

The Frisia V was in regular service from 1965 to 2016.
