Akçakoca is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Düzce . The place is about 30 kilometers north of the provincial capital Düzce on the Black Sea . The city is home to about 41 percent of the district's population.
The district is in the north of the province. It borders Zonguldak Province to the east, Yığılca to the south , the central district, Çilimli and Cumayeri , Sakarya Province to the west and the Black Sea to the north. The D010 trunk road , which begins in the west at Karasu and follows the Black Sea coast to the east via Zonguldak , Sinop , Samsun and Trabzon to the Georgian border, crosses the city and the district. The D655 , which leads to Düzce, branches off to the east of the district town . In the south of the district lies the Akçakoca Dağları mountain range , which stretches to Zonguldak in the east. In the west, the 1152 meter high Kaplandede Dağı connects , from both smaller rivers flow north into the sea. Near the village of Aktaş, about seven kilometers southwest of Akçakoca, they form waterfalls that are well worth seeing. The western border to Sakarya roughly follows the Melen Çayı River .
The district has existed since 1934 and, in addition to the administrative center ( Merkez ), also includes 43 villages ( Köy ), none of which have more than 1,000 inhabitants ( Tepeköy : 722 inhabitants). On average, 301 people inhabit each of the 43 villages.
In ancient times, Akçakoca was the trading post of Dia or Diospolis, which belonged to the Bithynian city of Prusias ad Hypium .
West of the city center is a castle built by the Genoese from the 13th century.
