The Akademietheater in Vienna is the small venue of the Vienna Burgtheater .

history

It was built between 1911 and 1913 by the architects Ludwig Baumann , Fellner and Helmer as a practice stage for the Academy for Music and Performing Arts at Lisztstraße 1 (3rd district, Landstraße ). The building of the theater and the academy was built by the Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft , handed over to the state after completion and opened on February 4, 1914 with Giuseppe Verdi's A Masked Ball . Since 1922 it has been used by the Burgtheater as a chamber theater. It has 500 seats, 32 standing places and 4 wheelchair places. The auditorium was changed in 1939 and 1975.

Performances

The Akademietheater mainly plays contemporary pieces, which makes the theater particularly attractive to younger audiences than the Burgtheater . In particular, works by the currently most performed contemporary dramatist in Germany, Roland Schimmelpfennig , are performed here, sometimes also as premieres, which illustrates the importance of this stage for the German-speaking area. Among other things, the theater also served as a stage for the following world premieres:
