Alban Darche (born April 19, 1974 in Quimper ) is a French jazz musician ( saxophone , composition ).

Darche, who initially pursued academic interests, studied classical music at the Nantes Conservatory before enrolling in the jazz class of the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris in 1995 .

After graduating, Darche founded his trio AD3 (with bassist Frédéric Chiffoleau and drummer Emmanuel Birault) and the big band Gros Cube , with whom he released several albums. Together with John Hollenbeck , he led the international quartet JASS (with Sébastien Boisseau and Samuel Blaser ). His album Perception instantanée (2014) with his nonet OrphiCube (with accordionist Didier Ithursarry ) belongs to Karl Lippegaus “one of the most beautiful French jazz albums in recent years.” He was also a member of Jean-Louis Pommiers Qüntêt , from Fred Pallem's Sacre du Tympanum and also belonged to the Jazzophone Quartet, Klezmerstone, Quartethno and Laia Gencs Liaison Tonique 5 .

Together with Sebastien Boisseau and Jean-Louis Pommier, Darche founded the Yolkmusic label in 2000 , which received the Victoire du Jazz as “Label of the Year” in 2019 ; the three musicians also appear as the Yolk Trio ( Clover , 2020). The album Longboard: Being Wild , which he with Matthieu Donarier presented and Meivelyan Jacquot, was the award of the Jazz Journalists Association nominated in 2020 in the category "Best Album Art". He also worked with the Orchester National de Jazz , Philippe Katerine , Thomas de Pourquery , Jeanne Added , Gábor Gadó , Tim Berne , Marc Ducret , Julien Lourau , Kenny Wheeler , Driss El Maloumi, Baptiste Trotignon and André Minvielle , as a theater musician also with the Director Sylvain Maurice , the choreographer Nasser Martin-Gousset and the playwright Marion Aubert .

As a composer, Darche uses "jazz rock and chamber music, wild tangos and euphoric Balkan folklore, Paso Doble and Musette waltzes" as material for independent works in which "irrepressible playfulness and humor are not neglected". In 2016 he composed together with Mathias Rüegg and Jean-Christophe Cholet Le Tombeau de Poulenc for big band and two pianists (album 2017 at Yolkmusic ). From 2014 to 2016 he worked as part of the DGCA / Sacem program for associated resident composers at the Estran von Guidel and for the Théâtre de Sartrouville et des Yvelines . In 2017 he was a laureate of the Adami-365 program . He is currently working for Musique et Danse en Loire Atlantique .
