Alen Omić (born May 6, 1992 in Tuzla , Bosnia and Herzegovina ) is a Bosnian - Slovenian basketball player . The Slovenian international played professionally for the two clubs Zlatorog Laško and Olimpija Ljubljana in his new Slovenian homeland. Omić has been playing abroad for the Gran Canaria club in the Spanish ACB league since the 2015/16 season .

Career

Omić left his Bosnian homeland at the age of 14 to pursue a career as a basketball player and to improve his skills in the Slovenian town of Črnomelj on the border with Croatia . At this point, the tall Omić had only just started this sport, having previously mainly played football . Just three years later, Omić, at the age of 17, moved to KK Zlatorog from Laško in 2009 , whose men's team plays in the highest Slovenian league. From this club, Omić made it into the junior teams of his new home. In his second season for the club this improved to first place in the preliminary round, which was played without the ABA League clubs Union Olimpija and KK Krka . After the fourth place in the main round with these internationally active teams, the good performance of these clubs in the Adriatic Basketball League (ABA) 2010/11 ensured that KK Zlatorog qualified for this regional competition after a six-year absence. In the ABA League 2011/12 , the KK Zlatorog finished last after only two victories in 26 games, with nationally in fourth place again.

For the 2012/13 season, junior selection player Omić moved to the record and then runner-up KK Union Olimpija in the capital Ljubljana . In the ABA league 2012/13 you reached eighth place, while you could defend the title win in the national cup competition 2013. But in the play-off final series of the championship, as in the following season, they were again defeated by KK Krka for the fifth time in a row. After finishing tenth in 2014 in the ABA League, the team was able to improve to fifth in the 2014/15 ABA League . After having remained without a national title in the preseason, they failed in the national championship play-offs in 2015 in the first round. Already in his first season at Olimpija, Omić had his first international experience with the men in the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2012/13 , when the team was eliminated after the preliminary round after three wins in ten games. In the following Eurocup 2013/14 the team was eliminated after winning the group in the preliminary round in a direct comparison against the German representative ratiopharm Ulm in the intermediate round after just one more victory. This was repeated in the Eurocup 2014/15 , when they lost all games against the German clubs Bayern Munich and Brose Baskets and only won the game at JDA Dijon in the second round .

National coach Jurij Zdovc had nominated Omić for the first time for a final squad for the men at the 2014 World Cup . In the group stage they only lost the final group game against Lithuania . However, this meant that you met the defending champions United States in the quarter-finals , to whom you clearly lost with 76: 119. In the following European Championship finals in 2015 , Slovenia competed without its NBA star Goran Dragić and Omić showed his value for the national team with a double-double in the victory in the final group game against Macedonia . But in the following round of 16 he remained below his possibilities and the team was eliminated from the tournament and the Olympic qualification after the defeat against Latvia . In the 2014 NBA Summer League , Omić wore the Brooklyn Nets jersey and a year later the Denver Nuggets in the United States , but for the 2015/16 season he and his teammate, Finnish international Sasu Salin , initially switched to the Spanish league ACB to the Eurocup finalist CB Herbalife from Gran Canaria . In the Canary Islands he replaces the even longer Walter Tavares , who in turn migrated to the NBA .
