Alexandar Tomow , Bulgarian Александър Томов , (born April 3, 1949 in Sandanski , Blagoevgrad Oblast ) is a former Bulgarian wrestler .

Career

Alexandar Tomow began wrestling as a teenager in his home town. Even as a teenager he was extraordinarily physically strong and soon grew into a full-grown heavyweight. In his last year as a teenager he was Spartakiadeieger and at the age of 19 he was used by the Bulgarian Wrestling Association at the Balkan Championships, where he immediately started in the heavyweight division, Greco-Roman. Style won. He joined the Bulgarian army and was stationed in Sofia . There P. Sirakow became his trainer, who systematically led him to the top of the world. Alexandar Tomow was now 1.92 m tall and weighed about 130 kg. In the following years he won the title of world champion five times and that of European champion five times. At the Olympic Games in 1972 , 1976 and 1980 , however, he had to be content with a silver medal every time. The Soviet athletes Anatoly Roschtschin and Oleksandr Kolchynskyj blocked him three times on the gold medal. Alexandar Tomow ended his international career in 1981, but dared a comeback in 1984, at the age of 35, and was again European champion. He was unable to take part in his fourth Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 , as politicians prevented him from going through the Olympic boycott. Despite the fact that he was never able to become an Olympic champion, Alexandar Tomov was certainly one of the best Greco-Roman style super heavyweights to ever stand on the mat. In September 2003 he was one of the first to be inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame for his services to wrestling . He was an officer in the Bulgarian People's Army, but only wrestler during his active time.
