Alexander Campbell (born 1779 in Frederick County , Virginia , † November 5, 1857 in Ripley , Ohio ) was an American politician for the Democratic Republican Party from Ohio.

Campbell was born in Frederick County, Virginia. During his childhood, his parents moved him to Tennessee and then to Kentucky . There he attended the Pisgah Academy in Woodford County , then completed his medical degree at Transylvania University and practiced for a short time in Cynthiana . In 1803 he moved to Ohio and settled in Adams County . From 1807 to 1809 he sat in the Ohio House of Representatives and temporarily acted as speaker , but then resigned to take a seat in the US Senate . In 1808 he lost an election for the US Senate, but received the seat vacated by the resignation of Edward Tiffin through a by-election . His tenure lasted from 1809 to 1813. In 1819 and from 1832 to 1833 he served several times in the Ohio House of Representatives, as well in the Ohio Senate from 1822 to 1824 . In 1826 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of governor .

From 1838 to 1840 he was Mayor of Ripley. He died there in 1857.
