Alexander Ivanovich Koroljuk ( Russian Александр Иванович Королюк ; born January 15, 1976 in Moscow , Russian SFSR ) is a Russian ice hockey player who was most recently under contract with HK Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk in the Continental Hockey League .
Career
Koroljuk began his professional career in the 1993/94 season with Krylja Sowetow Moscow in the Russian Super League . There he played until the 1996/97 season before he moved to North America in the International Hockey League for the Manitoba Moose .
After the San Jose Sharks had selected him in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft in the sixth round in 141st position, he signed a contract there before the start of the 1997/98 season . First, the Sharks put him in the American Hockey League with the Kentucky Thoroughblades , but brought him into the National Hockey League during the season . The following season Koroljuk spent again in the AHL and NHL. In the 1999/2000 season, the Russian established himself in the Northern Californian squad. Since his contract expired at the end of the season, however, and the Sharks were unwilling to present him with a better paid contract, he moved back to Russia to Ak Bars Kazan . After a short time he accepted the offer from San José and returned to the USA, where he stayed until the end of the 2001/02 season .
Then Koroljuk moved back to his homeland again. At Ak Bars Kazan, he played the entire 2002/03 season, before he was hired again for a year with the Sharks in the following season . Due to the NHL lockout during the entire 2004/05 season , Koroljuk went back to Russia. For a year he played with Vityas Chekhov in the second-rate Russian Wysschaya League . As the league's top scorer, he led the team to promotion to the super league, but moved to Chimik Woskressensk for the rest of the season . In the summer he returned to Chekhov. Because of his achievements in the 2005/06 season, he took part in February 2006 for Russia in the Olympic ice hockey tournament.
In the summer of 2006, the Sharks Koroljuks gave transfer rights, together with Jim Fahey , to the New Jersey Devils , as they did not expect his return to the NHL, and received a first-round pick in the NHL Entry Draft 2007 . On February 16, 2007, San Jose got back Koroljuks transfer rights from the Devils in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2007 Entry Draft. Just six days later, Sharks general manager Doug Wilson announced that the barter was being reversed because Korolyuk had chosen to stay in Russia. Korolyuk stayed with Vityas Chekhov until the end of the 2007/08 season. After founding the Continental Hockey League , he moved to league rivals Atlant Mytishchi in the summer of 2008 , whom he left after just one year to join the SKA Saint Petersburg .
He spent the 2010/11 season at Lokomotive Yaroslavl , but did not receive a new contract after the end of the season. It was not until September 2011, shortly after the start of the 2011/12 season, that Koroljuk signed a contract with Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk . In June 2012 he returned to Vityaz Chekhov. After Vitjas could no longer reach the play-offs, Koroljuk was loaned to HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk in January 2013 and returned to Vitjas at the end of the season.
At the beginning of the 2014/15 season he was back under contract with Neftechimik before moving to HK Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk in November 2014 .
