Johann Alexander Friedrich Wilhelm August von Freyhold (born April 26, 1813 in Graudenz , † January 31, 1871 in Stettin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commandant of Stettin .

Life

Alexander was a son of the Prussian captain a. D. Ferdinand Gotthilf von Freyhold (1771–1832) and his wife Barbara Konstanze, born von Drombrowski (1786–1856).

Military career

Freyhold visited the cadet houses in Kulm and Berlin . Subsequently, on August 10, 1831, he was transferred to the 4th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a second lieutenant . As an educator he was assigned to the cadet house in Kulm from August 1836 and from November 1836 to the cadet house in Berlin. On May 8, 1841, he was transferred to the Cadet Corps while being promoted to Prime Lieutenant . By mid-April 1848 Freyhold advanced to captain and company commander and on November 16, 1850 he was aggregated to the 7th Infantry Regiment . From March to December 1851 he was director of the United Division Schools of the V Army Corps and was then transferred to the 9th Infantry Regiment as a company commander . This was followed from June 18, 1853 as a major in the General Staff of the 12th Division and from July 1856 in the General Staff of the VI. Army Corps . Then he was transferred to the 6th Infantry Regiment as battalion commander on December 5, 1857 , and in this position was promoted to lieutenant colonel in May 1858 .

For the duration of the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War , Freyhold was in 1859 commander of the mobile 6th Landwehr regiment. On May 8, 1860, he was commissioned to lead the 6th Combined Infantry Regiment, from which the 1st Lower Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 46 emerged on July 4, 1860 . On this date Freyhold became a colonel and commander of this regiment. As major general he was then from June 25, 1864 to June 17, 1865 commander of the 17th Infantry Brigade in Glogau and was then appointed commander of the cadet corps.

During the German War Freyhold was on May 29, 1866 for the duration of the mobilization commander of the 1st combined infantry brigade, which he led in the Main Army in the battles near Kissingen , Uettingen and Roßbrunn . On September 15, 1866 he was again commander of the Cadet Corps, a few days later received the Order of the Crown, Second Class with Swords, for his work during the war, and on December 31, 1866, with a patent from October 30, 1866, he was promoted to Lieutenant General. He was also awarded the Order of St. Anna 1st Class on June 25, 1867 and the Order of the Red Eagle 2nd Class with Oak Leaves on August 22, 1827 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Cadet Corps . On January 9, 1868 he was appointed commander of Stettin and in mid-September 1869 he was awarded the star of the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. Freyhold died in Stettin on January 31, 1871 while exercising his duties.

In 1847 Freyhold received the following assessment: "Shows firmness of character, good will and the desire to continue training, which is why he promises to be a very useful officer."

He married Laura Sophie Amalie von Steinbach (1830–1905) in Berlin on January 5, 1850, who was buried in the Invalidenfriedhof after her death . The couple had several children:
