Alexander Eduard Reinhold Freiherr von Massenbach (born April 30, 1818 in Bannaskeim , † August 11, 1891 in Kraschnitz ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Alexander was a son of the Prussian major and gentleman on Jeesau and Galbuhnen Ludwig von Massenbach (1783–1867) and his wife Friederike, born chef von Sternberg (1788–1846).

Military career

Massenbach graduated from high school in Rastenburg and joined the 1st Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a musketeer on December 19, 1835 . He was promoted to secondary lieutenant by mid-May 1839 , was in command of the 1st Combined Reserve Battalion in Graudenz from October 1843 and served as an adjutant of this battalion from April 1843 to September 1847 . In the same capacity, Massenbach was active in his regular regiment from March 1849 to December 1852 and has meanwhile been promoted to prime lieutenant . On March 20, 1853 he was commanded as a company commander in the 1st Battalion in the 1st Landwehr Regiment and in early January 1855 he was promoted to captain . When he was appointed company commander , he returned to his regular regiment on April 10, 1858. On February 23, 1861, Massenbach was transferred to the 5th East Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 41 . This was followed by promotion to major on June 26, 1865, a service in the 2nd Pomeranian Grenadier Regiment (Colberg) No. 9 . Two months later, Massenbach was appointed commander of the 1st battalion, which he led in 1866 during the war against Austria in the battle of Königgrätz . For his work he received the Red Eagle Order IV class with swords.

On October 1, 1867, he took over the fusilier battalion and rose to lieutenant colonel at the end of March 1868 . For the duration of the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , Massenbach was commander of the 3rd combined Brandenburg Landwehr Regiment, which he led in front of Metz and Paris as well as in the battles at Gravelotte and Villiers . On March 25, 1871, he was transferred to the army officers and, having been awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , was appointed commander of the 8th Pomeranian Infantry Regiment No. 61 after the peace treaty on June 20, 1871 . In this capacity he became a mid- colonel and on December 2, 1875, under position à la suite of his regiment, he was commissioned to lead the 20th Infantry Brigade in Posen . When he was promoted to major general on December 30, 1875, he was appointed commander of this large association and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords on the ring, on the occasion of the festival in January 1878. Massenbach had married Adele von Krohn (1826-1909) on July 23, 1844 in Laskowitz . The daughter Margarethe (* 1848) emerged from the marriage.
