He celebrated his first major success at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary with a victory over 30 kilometers and second place with the Soviet relay. Nine years later, he won the 30 kilometers at the Nordic World Ski Championships, and between 1989 and 1997 he won five other medals at Nordic World Championships. In 1998 the Norwegian Ski Association honored him with the Holmenkollen Medal . After the 2001/02 season, he resigned from competitive sports.
He worked for the Russian Ski Federation until his death and was one of the head coach of the World Cup team; most recently trainer of the sprint specialist Natalja Konstantinowna Matwejewa . On October 10, 2008, he was on his way to a meeting of the Olympic Committee in Vladimir . While crossing a street, he was hit by the car of a drunk driver who was driving without a license. Prokurorow died at the scene of the accident.
