Alfred Keller (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alfred Keller (born June 17, 1875 in Graz , † March 8, 1945 in Krems an der Donau ) was an Austrian architect , painter and graphic artist.

Life

Alfred Keller studied from 1893 to 1898 at the Technical University and the Landscape Drawing Academy in Graz. He then became an engineer assistant at the Graz City Planning Office in 1898 and graduated in 1899. He went to Vienna , where he was a construction assistant until 1907, and from 1908 an engineer in the Imperial and Royal Dicastral Building Directorate. In the same year he was accepted into the Ministry of Public Works and after that he began to work independently. Since 1904 he was a member of the Hagenbund , whose president he was from 1912 to 1917. Keller, who had already made a trip to India in 1897, stayed in the USA from 1913 to 1915 as an exhibition architect. Further stays abroad took him to Spain after the war 1920–1925. He therefore employed Walter Broßmann in his home studio, who became an equal partner from 1926 to 1932 after Keller returned. In addition to his work as an architect, Keller worked for the periodical Wohnungskunst from 1919 to 1920 , in 1927 an expert at the Higher Regional Court for Copyright and in 1928 a member of the examination committee for the authorization of civil engineers for building construction and civil architects. After he became a full professor at the Vienna University of Technology in 1930 for building theory, building economics and transport engineering, he retired from his architecture studio. 1935–1936 he was dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University.

Alfred Keller was an internationally respected and honored man. In 1928 he received the Golden Medal for Services to the Republic of Austria , in 1929 the Gran Premio and the Medalla de Oro in Barcelona and in 1930 the Commander's Cross of the Spanish Order of Merit from the Spanish King. In addition to many other memberships, Keller was a member of the Austrian Werkbund from 1913 and of the Vienna Fine Arts Cooperative from 1920. After his death at the age of 70, he was buried in the Krems cemetery.

meaning

Alfred Keller was a very productive architect. He created residential and commercial buildings, villas and hotels, as well as numerous industrial buildings and factories, but also interior fittings and exhibition designs. Keller was a representative of the Heimat style with references to the southern German homeland security movement. In the buildings that were created together with Walter Broßmann, the specific share of the individual architects can no longer be determined. As a graphic artist, Keller designed catalog covers and posters, as a painter he created oil paintings and watercolors.
