history

It is uncertain whether the city is to be equated with the settlement Saetabicula founded by the Iberian tribe of the Contestani . Alzira was founded as Al-Yazirat Suquar (Júcar Island) by Arabs, in the Middle Ages it was a flourishing Moorish trading post . In 1242 the city was conquered by James I (Aragón) (1208–1276) and brought under Spanish control. In 1472, 1590, 1864, 1916, 1982 and 1987 the city was flooded.

economy

Alzira was surrounded by palm and mulberry groves until the 20th century, and rice was grown in the damp lowlands. The city has now become an important industrial center (paper and chemicals) and the population lives mainly from growing oranges.
