The Ampfrach is a brook over 10 km long on the Frankenhöhe in the western district of Ansbach in Bavaria , which flows into the Wörnitz from the right and northwest at Feuchtwangen - Reichenbach .

geography

course

The Ampfrach rises at about 477  m above sea level. NN a source about one kilometer west of the outskirts of Schnelldorf - Grimmschimmern , which is north of the Simonsberg at the base of a small eastern forest ledge. From here to the mouth it flows very steadily in an east-southeast direction.

After passing Grimmschwinden on the south side of the village, before entering the local area of Schnelldorf itself, it takes a short tributary from the right, which previously feeds a chain of ponds, including the black grouse pond . After Schnelldorf, the stream immediately crosses under the Crailsheim – Nürnberg railway line and then runs through the Ampfrachsee nature reserve , where it first takes in the 1.8 km long Moritzbach from the right, then immediately from the left the 2.8 km long Heckelbach , its nameless and longer left upper reaches at the southern foot of the Hornberg and feeds the Erlensee bathing lake before it flows into the federal motorway 6 . The Ampfrach then flows through the Ampfrachsee.

At the outflow she soon finds out at 453  m above sea level. NN on a very loopy section inlet from the Pfeifenbuck in the north through the 3.1 km long Aubach . On the outskirts of Unterampfrach this section ends for the time being and the Ampfrach branches off to the right a side ditch Katzenbach , into which the 2.5 km long Altweiherbach flows, which arises west of Ransbach an der Holzecke . After crossing the village of Unterampfrach, which is mostly on the right, the now meandering brook runs under the A 7 and only takes the Gröhrichtbach (2.3 km) from the left and from the north , and immediately afterwards the Rotbach (3.2 km) from the west-south- west km) on the southern edge of Haundorf . The stream is now the border between the community of Schnelldorf and the area of the city of Feuchtwangen . Shortly before the inlet of the right, 3.0 km long Holderbach, a little afterwards, it crosses over to the Feuchtwanger area.

Less than half a kilometer further down the valley, the Ampfrach flows after a run of 10.5 km on the north side of the state road 1066 from the right and east-northeast across from Feuchtwangen - Reichenbach at about 447  m above sea level. NN in the upper Wörnitz , a few meters north of the Wörnitz bridge of the state road 1066. It has a mean bed gradient of about 2.9 ‰ from the source to the mouth , on the 6.7 km section from the tributary of the Heckelbach to its mouth one of only still around 1.6 ‰ and thus shows the flat course typical of the waters running towards the Danube in the region.

Catchment area

It covers 30.6 km², lies in the Frankenhöhe natural area and includes for the most part and in its flat and open areas part of its sub-area Wörnitz basin as well as mostly wooded peripheral mountains around the wide Ampfrach valley bay in the Crailsheimer Hardt sub-area (in the broader sense). At the northern tip of the area is the Hornberg , whose summit is 554  m above sea level. NN is the highest point of the entire Swiss franc.

The main European watershed runs along the western border of the catchment area between the Black Sea tributary Danube on this side, into which the Ampfrach drains via the Wörnitz, and the catchment area of the Jagst on the other side, which flows over the Neckar and Rhine into the North Sea . The shorter border from the Hornberg to the southeast separates the catchment area of the upper Wörnitz tributary Waldhausener Mühlbach .

The longer section of the major watershed in the southwest is nowhere near the border between Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg . The vast majority of the catchment area belongs to the community of Schnelldorf , a small one near the estuary also to the extensive area of the city of Feuchtwangen , both of which are in the district of Ansbach .

The Ampfrach has created a very flat Talbucht with its tributaries, which, apart from narrow strips to the streams and trenches with grassland, is predominantly Upturned.

Coming from Württemberg in the west, the Federal Motorway 6 and the Crailsheim – Nuremberg railway line run west-east through the upper part of the valley. The federal motorway 7 crosses it at its transition to the wide valley axis of the Wörnitz on the lower course. This is followed on the left side in more or less the same distance as the national road number still in Württemberg Michel stream at the gap starting state road 2222 from Schnellendorf to the mouth.

The Ampfrach runs in a wide floodplain sediment band just below Schnelldorf.
