The An der Gassen and Andergassen families mostly come from Kaltern on the Wine Route in South Tyrol , the Überetsch region there and the South Tyrolean lowlands .

Beginnings

As early as 1343, a toldo on the Gassen was mentioned in a document from the Heiliggeistspital Bozen . In 1419 a Peter an der Gassen is mentioned in a document from the parish archive of Kaltern. He was undoubtedly the owner of the Ansitz an der Gassen in Kaltern-Oberplanitzing, which is still near the Church of St. John the Baptist.

genealogy

The question of whether there was a connection between the Herren an der Gassen von Tirol and the Überetscher An der Gassen can only be answered if this is adequately proven by sources. For the time being, it must remain a myth in the Andergassen family history.

However, evidence for this thesis could be that a Peter an der Gassen is mentioned in a document as a member of the family an der Gassen von Tirol in 1394. If it is the same person who appears as Peter an der Gassen von Oberplanitzing in 1419 in the above-mentioned Kalterer deed, this would be a source of a family relationship between the Tyrolean bishop's family and the Andergasse family first mentioned in a document in Kaltern.

coat of arms

On October 7, 1555, Hans von der Gassen was given a coat of arms in Innsbruck . Description: cross specialist black over silver, chamois growing, colors impersonated crest , chamois as before growing. Source: Typar. Caspar an der Gassen, called Walch in the Catnaw, perhaps to Cagnò am Nonsberg ( Trentino ). Court of Schenna . October 1, 1588

The second modern coat of arms, which was much more formative for the families, was given to the brothers Hans, Georg and Michael an der Gassen with a fiefdom article by Emperor Maximilian II in Prague on March 1, 1575, due to merits in the administration and in the war against the Ottomans . The letter of arms awarded has been lost since the Second World War. The majority of the Kalterer Andergasse families existing today are most likely descendants of these historically leading families. The coat of arms is stylistically influenced by the Renaissance .

Description of coat of arms: A silver bias tape divides the shield in the middle, from top right to bottom left. In the lower, blue field there are three gold-colored, six-pointed stars. The figure of a man is depicted in the upper, golden field. Both fields are decorated with ornaments. The sitter wears a trimmed gray mustache and longer hair. He is dressed in a blue and white Hungarian coat, which is closed by six gold-colored buttons, and whose doublet is held by a blue belt. The head is covered with a blue hat and a yellow cover. In his right hand he holds a drawn silver and gold saber, with his left hand he supports himself on the side. The fencer can be seen again above the silver stech helmet , which is the heraldic symbol of the civic coat of arms. Blue and yellow spiraled helmet covers act as a crest ornament.

Name spelling

The name , coined by two prepositions and originally denoting a place of residence , has been written together in the parish registers since their introduction in the Tridentinum .

Since German-speaking names in South Tyrol were partially Italianized and replaced by Italian fascism for political reasons , an Italian variant has also existed with Dallavia .
