André Charlier (born June 13, 1962 in Verviers ) is a Belgian jazz musician ( drums ).

Live and act

In 1978, Charlier began to play the drums autodidactically before attending the jazz class at the Liège Conservatory of Music in 1979 and taking lessons from Bruno Castellucci and Vinnie Johnson . In 1981 he began to work as a professional musician, initially in various rock and jazz formations. 1985/86 he stayed in Los Angeles to take lessons from Ralph Humphrey ; after his return he played a. a. with Guy Cabay ( Vibes , 1987), Jacques Pirotton ( Artline , 1987), and Ivan Paduart , Richard Rousselet , Steve Houben , Jean-Louis Rassinfosse , Dave Pike , Arnould Massart and Kevin Mulligan and Vincent Mardens , in Paris with Didier Lockwood ( Round About Silence ), Yannick Robert , in the Pierrejean Gaucher New Trio and Benoît Sourisse .

From 1987 he taught at various music conservatories in Amay and Chaudfontaine ; from 1990 he taught at the Nancy Conservatory, but also taught at other conservatories in France. Between 1989 and 1991 he accompanied the chanson singer Maurane . Then he played in the ORJL Big Band under the direction of Barry Altschul and with François Méchali . At the Vittel Festival in 1992 he performed with Scott Henderson ; Ivan Paduart ( Papillon bleus ) got him in the same year . From 1993 he worked in the group of Didier Lockwood, as well as in the group In Folio (with Benoît Sourisse and Éric Séva ). In 1998 he toured in a trio with Fabrice Alleman and Sourice.

Together with Benoît Sourisse, Charlier led a band from 2000 on, with which he released several albums. From the 2000s he was also in France on recordings a. a. with Romane , Didier Lockwood, Alexandre Cavaliere , Jean-Michel Charbonnel ( Individus Civilises (2006), inter alia with Jerry Bergonzi ), Fréderic Loiseau and Marc-Michel Le Bevillon .

In the field of jazz, he participated in 58 recording sessions between 1985 and 2017, according to Tom Lord , in 2015 with Laurence Allison ( Claro ).
