Andrei Nikolajewitsch Korff
Baron Andrei Nikolayevich Korff ( Russian Андрей Николаевич Корф ; born July 10, jul. / 22. July 1831 greg. , † January 24 jul. / 5. February 1893 greg. In Khabarovsk ) one was Russian General of Infantry and Governor General of the Amur region .
Life
Andrei, a member of the Kurland branch of the Korff family , graduated from the St. Petersburg Military Academy Page Corps . From May 1849 he served as an ensign, from December 1852 as a lieutenant, from April 1854 as a first lieutenant and from August 1855 as a captain. In 1856 Andrei Korff commanded the officers' rifle school. From August 1857 he took part in the Caucasus War as a captain . In Chechnya , Andrei Korff was wounded near Vedeno (village, about 55 km southeast of Grozny ) and decorated with the Order of St. George in June 1859 .
In 1861 he became a colonel and in 1865 commanded the 99th Ivangorod Infantry Regiment. As major general, Andrei Korff commanded the Lithuanian Life Guard Regiment in 1869 . From 1873 to 1879 he commanded a number of brigades and divisions - for example in Warsaw . In 1878 he became lieutenant general.
From July 14, 1884 to February 6, 1892 Andrei Korff was the governor general of the Amur area and commander of the Amur military district. This included the areas of Vladivostok , Blagoveshchensk , Chita and the Sakhalin Island . He also was Ataman of the Amur and Ussuri - Cossacks .
On the one hand, Andrei Korff's harshness against political prisoners in the Katorga Kara provoked international protests, but on the other hand, the general made a contribution to the development of the region during his service - for example in the settlement of the Ussuri region, the coal mining on Sakhalin, the fishing in the Pacific marginal seas and species protection on the commander's islands . Andrei Korff took care of the school education, promoted the orthodox proselytizing of the native Siberians (non-Russians) and promoted trade with Japan and China .
