Anthony Stephen Fauci (/ ˈfaʊtʃi /; born December 24, 1940 in New York City ) is an American immunologist .

Life

Fauci received an MD from the Medical College of the prestigious Cornell University in Ithaca , New York , in 1966 . He worked as a resident at New York Hospital in his hometown of New York City before moving to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in 1968 , a facility of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda , Maryland . In 1974 he took over the management of the department for clinical physiology there and in 1980 the laboratory for immune regulation there . Fauci has been director of NIAID since 1984.

Fauci made a name for himself in the fledgling AIDS research in the early 1980s . He is one of the pioneers in research into immune regulation in humans. He managed to identify several immunoregulatory factors. Fauci was also able to describe the normal function of B lymphocytes . Successful therapies for previously fatal autoimmune diseases are based on his research . Fauci identified cellular and molecular mechanisms of the expression of HIV in chronically and latently infected cells.

He is among the editors of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine , a standard textbook for internal medicine (17th edition (2008), 18th edition, 19th edition (2015) and 20th edition (2018)).

Fauci is an advisor to all US presidents and their governments, since the Ronald Reagan cabinet , on biohazard issues as well as infection with HIV and other viruses . Its public awareness increased significantly , particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States .

Fauci was awarded 45 honorary doctorates ; he is the author, co-author or editor of over 1300 scientific publications (as of 2020). According to Google Scholar, Fauci has an h-index of 220, according to the Scopus database it is 175 (as of July 2020).
