Anton of Magnus

Anton Franz Freiherr von Magnus also Anton Iwan (born January 14, 1821 in Berlin , † August 11, 1882 in Görlitz ) was a Prussian diplomat .

Life

Origin and family

Anton was a son of the owner of the banking house F. Mart, who was ennobled in 1853 and 1869 . Magnus , Friedrich Martin von Magnus (1796–1869) and Franziska Maria Fränkel (1801–1841). Paul Julius Reuter (1816–1899) was his brother-in-law.

He married in 1855 in Stuttgart with Baroness Helene of Brunnow (1835-1859). Their daughter Lily, born in Brussels in 1858, emerged from the marriage .

Career

Magnus was initially the Prussian legation secretary in Stuttgart. Later he also held the position of legation councilor. From 1866 to 1867 he was Prime Minister and Consul General in Mexico , where he a. a. unsuccessfully tried to obtain the release of Emperor Maximilian . Afterwards he was ambassador to The Hague , Saint Petersburg , Vienna and Copenhagen . By personal appointment he was a member of the Prussian manor house in 1872 . Since 1875 he was hereditary lord on Amalienberg near Gaggenau , and also Rittmeister of the Landwehr .

From 1869 to 1872 he was the extraordinary envoy and authorized minister in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg and in the free Hanseatic cities of Lübeck , Bremen and Hamburg , and was also Knight of Honor of the Order of St. John .
