Aore ( Aoré ) is an island in the province of Sanma in the Pacific island state of Vanuatu . The island also bears the settlement of the same name and the native language Aore is spoken.

geography

Aore is opposite Luganville on Espiritu Santo and has an area of ​​58 km²; it rises to a height of 89  m . It forms an extension of Santo, which continues in the two islands of Malo and Tutuba to the south and east. Small rock islands in the east and south of the island are Bokissa , Voïsa , Île Ratoua and Île Wékésa . The island itself is roughly heart-shaped, with the tip in the southwest ( Pointe Richard ) and the east side being divided by two bays ( Baie de la Délimitation / Aimbuei Bay and Port Bénier ). The island's settlement area is mainly on the east coast. The northeasternmost point of the island, Pointe Chapuis is opposite Palikulo on Santo with the Million Dollar Point on the Scorff Passage . To the south, the headland joins the Pointe Naourata and then the southeast tip of the island with the Pointe Carloti .

climate

The climate of Aore is humid and tropical . The annual amount of precipitation is 3000 mm. The island is often hit by cyclones and earthquakes.

tourism

There are numerous tourist accommodation options and diving and fishing offers are made. The area is known for a particularly large number of wrecks , including the wreck of the SS President Coolidge , SS Tucker and the MV Henry Bonneaud . In addition, agriculture is mainly practiced.

religion

The Seventh-day Adventist Church has had parishes on the island since the beginning of the 20th century and runs a co-educational boarding secondary school, Aore Adventist Academy , on the island's south coast.

The charismatic Christian organization Youth With A Mission (YWAM) maintains a Disciple Training School (DTS) for young adults. The courses run for 6 months. In half of this time, lessons are offered, while the second half is designed as an outreach (missionary assignment ).

Many bats live in the numerous caves on the island.
