Apo is a 72 hectare island in the Philippines . This is 7 km off the south coast of Negro and is a barangay of the municipality of Dauin . A handful of volcanic basalt hills up to max. 140 m height at the coordinates 9 ° 05 'north, 123 ° 15' east. From Negros, the island can be reached from the Maluay Pier ( Zamboanguita ) in about 30 minutes - when the sea is calm - with an outrigger boat. Around 750 people, 25% of them children, live on the island on the border between Lake Mindanao and Lake Sulu .

An island of the same name is located in the Apo Reef off the west coast of Mindoro .

In 1983 the Silliman University from Dumaguete City on Negros started a pioneering environmental project in cooperation with the local administration, initially against the resistance of the local fishermen, which is now bearing fruit for residents, the environment and tourists. August 9, 1994 which was Marine Reserve Apo Iceland Protected Landscape / Seascape officially added to protect the biosphere as part of the national protection program. About 74.2 hectares of marine area have been designated as a protection zone on the south-east coast of the island. In return, the residents receive 75% of the tourist entrance fee. The money goes to the whole community, e.g. For example, water tanks were built with it, a generator was bought, a boat for the coast guard was bought, etc. The remaining 25% goes to the environmental protection association. The inhabitants derive their income mainly from fishing.

The island is very popular with divers and snorkelers. In the protection zone there is a coral area that is unique in a wide area. The striking yellow-black Oriolus chinensis chinensis can also be observed, and magnificent frigate birds ( Fregata magnificens ) occasionally appear, especially when strong winds come up.
