Arthur Fagen

Arthur Fagen (* 1951 in New York ) is an American conductor .

Training and engagements

Arthur Fagen studied conducting with Laszlo Halasz and continued his studies at Wesleyan University , at the Curtis Institute with Max Rudolf and at the Mozarteum Salzburg under Hans Swarowsky and Tito Gobbi . After completing his studies, Fagen worked as an assistant to Christoph von Dohnányi at the Frankfurt Opera . He was first conductor and later became deputy of the GMD in Kassel . In 1975 he got a job as first conductor at the Enschede Opera . He also took on a leading position at the Staatstheater Braunschweig and finally became chief conductor at the Flanders Opera Antwerp / Gent in 1983 , before returning to the USA in 1986.

Fagen worked as a conductor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York since 1987 , where he had started as an assistant to James Levine . He has also conducted at the following houses:

Further engagements as a guest conductor have taken him to the Czech Philharmonic , the Philharmonic of Tokyo , Buffalo and Bergen , the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin and the orchestras of numerous national and international radio stations such as WDR , BR , ORF and Radiotelevisione Italiana .

More recently, Fagen has made guest appearances with the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon , conducted the Warsaw Philharmonic and, in 1999, took over the direction of a new production at the Opéra de Toulouse . In 2000 he conducted at the Opéra de Montpellier and was engaged there again in 2001. In 2003 he made his debut with the Orchester de la Suisse Romande in Geneva . In the same year he conducted at the Deutsche Oper Berlin , and in 2004 took part in a festival with a production in Budapest . In 2006 Fagen conducted the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra , the Nuremberg Philharmonic and at the Teatro Massimo .

Current activities

Since 2002 Fagen was GMD of the Dortmund Philharmonic . With them he made several guest appearances in the Great Festival Hall in Salzburg , in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam , and in the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels . In addition, a tour with the Dortmunders through China, where he a. a. performed in Beijing and Shanghai . He also directed numerous productions at the Dortmund Opera House . His tenure in Dortmund ended at the end of the 2006/07 season. His successor was Jac van Steen after an interim season in 2008 . In June 2011 Fagan conducted the world premiere of Gouvy's opera "Le Cid" at the Saarbrücken State Theater .

In addition, Fagen took part in CD productions and radio recordings for BMG / RCA, Radio China International (CRI), Bayerischer Rundfunk , Sender Free Berlin (SFB) and Westdeutscher Rundfunk, as well as a Rossini CD with Vesselina Kasarova and Ramon Vargas .

Awards

Fagen is the winner of the international Gino Marinuzzi competition and winner of the international conducting competition of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra .
