Assem Ahmed Marei ( Arabic عاصم مرعي; * June 16, 1992 in Giza ) is an Egyptian basketball player . After studying in the United States , international Marei, who won a silver medal at the African Championships with Egypt in 2013 , began a professional career in Europe . After a season in Lithuania , where he won the Baltic Basketball League with KK Šiauliai, Marei played two seasons for the German first division club medi Bayreuth in the basketball Bundesliga , where he was also a participant in the 2018 BBL All-Star Game .
Career
Marei's father Ahmed had already been an Egyptian basketball player and had participated with the Egyptian national team in the 1984 Olympic Games . Assem Marei started his career at the local club Zamalek in his hometown of Giza. With twelve championships and twelve men's trophies each, the club is one of the most successful and traditional clubs in the country. The last championship for Zamalek SC dated from 2007 and as a junior player Marei moved into the first team, there were no other championships for the time being. After the end of the 2010/11 season, Marei first reached a twelfth place with the Egyptian junior selection at the U-19 World Cup in Riga, Latvia, and achieved a double-double in points and rebounds per game at this junior tournament. Subsequently, at the age of just 19, Marei was appointed to a final squad of the Egyptian men's selection for the first time and reached eleventh place with the team at the 2011 African Championships after only two wins in five games. Then Marei first went to the United States to study at Minnesota State University, Mankato . In the student city, Marei was also active from 2012 in championship games for the university team Mavericks , which are organized in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). For a more ambitious program in Division I, Marei was no longer an option, as he had already started studying at an Arab university in his home country in 2009 and had played in the top Egyptian league, which drastically increased his "eligibility" according to the NCAA regulations restricted. Despite a only three-year career for the Mavericks, Marei was able to place in the annals of the team with career bests with 1,600 points, 787 rebounds and 161 shot blocks in the top ten in these categories. With his team, Marei won the championship in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) twice in 2013 and 2014 and failed in 2013 just after extra time in the Sweet Sixteen of the national finals of Division II in the regional final against the Warriors of Winona State University . In the subsequent finals, defeats to the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State University in the second and first round caused an early elimination at the national level. With the Egyptian national team, Marei only lost the quarter-final game against defending champions and record winners Angola at the 2015 African Cup of Nations in Tunisia and missed another medal win in fifth place, which Marei had achieved with the selection two years earlier at the 2013 African Cup of Nations. After three defeats in the preliminary round, they had initially remained victorious in the knockout rounds and had won the silver medal after a clear defeat in the final against Angola, with Marei being elected to the all-tournament team of the five best players of the tournament. A year later, Marei was not fit in time after a knee operation and had missed participation in the 2014 World Cup in Spain.
After finishing her studies in 2015, Marei began a professional career as a basketball player and joined the Lithuanian club from Šiauliai , with whom he also played in the FIBA Europe Cup 2015/16 . After a significant home defeat against the Polish club Śląsk Wrocław , the team missed the qualification for the second group stage. After being eliminated in international competition, the team continued to play in the play-offs of the Baltic Basketball League , in which they defended their title and the club won this competition for the third time in a row. In the national league LKL , the team reached sixth place after the main round with a balanced balance and was eliminated in the first play-off round for the championship against Neptūnas Klaipėda . As the best rebounder in the Lithuanian league with almost eight per game, Marei was able to recommend himself for a better endowed contract, which the German first division club BBC medi from Bayreuth granted him. In the basketball Bundesliga 2016/17 he reached fourth place with the Bayreuthers after the main round and thus for the first time in 20 years a Bayreuth team qualified for the play-offs for the German championship. In the first play-off round, however, you could not use the home right in the first game to defeat the eventual runner-up EWE Baskets Oldenburg , and after four games were eliminated from the title award. After another good placement in the first half of the basketball Bundesliga 2017/18 , the Bayreuth team qualified for the top four tournament in the easycredit BBL Cup 2018 for the first time in a long time , but in which they lost both games and finished fourth. A month earlier, Marei had already taken part in the BBL All-Star Game as one of the best and most popular foreign players in the league. Marei also played internationally with the Bayreuthers again, but they failed in the quarter-finals of the Basketball Champions League 2017/18 despite a first leg win away from their national competitor MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg and thus failed to make it into the Final Four tournament of this competition.
From the 2018 season Marei played for Pınar Karşıyaka in Turkey, and since September 2019 for Brose Bamberg.
