The Auersberg is 756.8  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Rhön . It is located in the Auersberger Kuppenrhön near Hilders in the Hessian district of Fulda .

The Auersburg ruins are located on a spur of the mountain . In the Bavarian part of the Rhön there are near Wildflecken the Große ( 808.6  m ) and Kleine Auersberg ( 808  m ).

The Auersberg rises in the Hessian Rhön Nature Park and in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve  - immediately north of the core town of Hilders , to whose municipal area most of the mountain and its summit belong. East of the mountain is Simmershausen , part of the Hilders community. To the northeast is Dippach , to the north Wendershausen and Lahrbach , north-north-west Neustädtges , north-west Unterrückersbach , west Neuschwambach and south-west Aura ; they all belong to the city of Tann .

Natural allocation

The Auersberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35), in the main unit Vorder- und Kuppenrhön (353) and in the subunit Kuppenrhön (353.2) to the natural area Auersberger Kuppenrhön (353.24). The landscape drops to the west towards Ulster in the natural area of Milseburger Kuppenrhön (353.21).

Flowing waters

The Ulster flows west past the Auersberg - through Hilders and Lahrbach. Its tributary Lahrbach rises on the northern slope . The Mühlbach runs past it to the east, and after Dippach it flows into the Ulster tributary Weid flowing north-northeast of the mountain .

Protected areas

The Auersberg nature reserve is located north of Hilders on the Auersberg ( CDDA no. 555560674; designated 2013; 64.48  hectares in size). In addition, parts of the Hessian Rhön landscape protection area (CDDA no. 378477; 1967; 410.1096  km² ) and the Hochrhön fauna-flora-habitat area (FFH no. 5525-351; 48.0962 km²) are located on the wooded mountain . and the Hessische Rhön bird sanctuary (VSG no. 5425-401; 360.8013 km²).

Auersburg ruins

The Auersburg ruins are located on a spur ( 589  m ) from the southwest slope of the Auersberg . The castle was built in an unknown time before the first mention in 1120. There are still high enclosing walls with loopholes, a cellar as well as remains of towers, moats and walls. There is a covered viewing platform on the western corner of the castle wall. There is a refuge inside the castle .

Transport links and hiking

The federal road 278 runs west past the Auersberg in the Ulstertal between Hilders, Lahrbach and Wendershausen . From this branch south of the mountain in Hilders, the state road  3176 branches off, which leads south-east to Frankenheim in Thuringia. From this road, in turn, the district road  35 branches off east of Hilders , which runs east of the mountain through Simmershausen and Dippach to Wendershausen to the B 278.

The Main-Werra-Weg of the Rhön Club and the hiking trail of the Hilderser lead over the western slope of the Auersberg and over the saddle that leads from the mountain to the spur of the Auersburg ruins .
