The Church of the Resurrection , known as Kulturkirche Ost in Cologne - Buchforst, is a modern Protestant church building with a community center, inaugurated in 1968 , designed by the architects Georg Rasch and Winfried Wolsky. The municipal housing company GAG Immobilien took over the sponsorship in 2012 to promote the location through cultural events. The church is an outstanding example of Protestant church architecture from the post-war period and was placed under monument protection in 1992, including the paving of the courtyard . The buildings were given up in May 2005 by the Protestant parish and given a new use as part of a model project. The church building and the paving of the courtyard were preserved, the outbuildings were renewed.

history

Laying of the foundation stone in 1965: Pastor Schäfer and Superintendent Mielke

Buchforst is a settlement area that emerged between the 1920s and 1930s. In the post-war period, many evangelical expellees moved there; the population increased. That is why the desire arose for a new Protestant church with an attached community center. The architects Georg Rasch and Winfried Wolsky were commissioned. Construction began in 1965. On March 10, 1968, the Church of the Resurrection was consecrated.

Located at street level is the forecourt, the right side of which is occupied by a sculpture-like object that serves as a visual replacement for a bell tower . The facade is provided with wood in the upper area and with a horizontally running formwork imprint in the lower part .

The main site is on an area above street level. Access is via a narrowing staircase in the direction of a square that is enclosed in a semicircle by single-storey buildings in which the community center and various ancillary rooms are located. The facades are clad with dark, horizontal wooden planks that are somewhat reminiscent of log cabins . The gable roofs are provided with copper sheet. The floor of the entire square consists of rubble stones and continues seamlessly in the church building.

The church building has the shape of an irregular tetrahedron . The two vertical elements are made of concrete, which shows the rough imprint of the formwork material outside and inside , which runs diagonally from below towards the tip.

The formwork imprint corresponds to the negative of the wooden planks used. From the front, the roof - also made of sheet copper - dominates, which extends from the top of the building to a height of around 2.50 meters. In the middle of the front is the entrance, to the left and right of it a wood-clad porch, followed by full-surface glazing that extends to the edge of the building.

The interior is very sparse and consists mainly of wooden benches placed at an angle and a small altar . The light strips - located in the edge area of the roof - set the structure of the concrete wall in scene with natural light, with the main amount of light being concentrated in the altar area. The ceiling construction is made of wood. The artificial lighting is realized by various conical lamps hanging down on the same level. The former master builder of the city of Cologne, Barbara Schock-Werner writes: "The Church of the Resurrection is definitely an ingenious design."

Since 2011, the sculpture “Devotional and Prayer Room” by the artist Barbara Kraemer on the northern side of the forecourt has been completing the ensemble.

Model project

In the framework of the model project " Church conversion in North Rhine-Westphalia", decided by the Ministry for Building and Transport, North Rhine-Westphalia in February 2006 , the Church of the Resurrection was selected along with thirteen others from a group of several hundred abandoned churches. Thanks to cooperation between the city of Cologne, the church and other parties involved, a proposal for a change of use was quickly found and presented to the ministry.

With the participation of the municipal housing company GAG Immobilien , which operates several large estates in the immediate vicinity (Kalkerfeld settlement, “White City” and “ Blauer Hof ”, 1927–1931 architect: Wilhelm Riphahn ), a concept was decided that would replace the Former community center planned a new development with inpatient home places, an outpatient community for dementia sufferers and five handicapped-accessible apartments. This construction project was completed in 2012. For the first time in its history, the GAG took over the sponsorship of a church. The church building may continue to be used by the evangelical community and can also be used for socio-cultural events as the “cultural church east”. A cultural program of readings, exhibitions, music, cabaret, a philosophical café and cultural cinema has been put together since 2013 in order to promote the social meeting place “Kulturkirche Ost” in the district. Over 150 events were organized in the first five years.
