August Hermann Niemeyer (born September 1, 1754 in Halle (Saale) ; † July 7, 1828 in Glaucha ) was a German theologian, pedagogue, librettist , poet, travel writer, Protestant hymn poet and Prussian educational politician.

Life

August Hermann Niemeyer attended education in Halle and studied theology at the local university from 1771–1777. On April 18, 1777 he received his doctorate in theology.

Niemeyer began his professional career in 1777 as a private lecturer in theology at the University of Halle , from 1784 he taught at the theological faculty there as a professor . He later founded and headed the university's pedagogical seminar and was ultimately appointed its chancellor and rector. In addition, Niemeyer was director of the Francke Foundations .

In 1785 he became co-director of the pedagogy and the orphanage, 1787 director of the theological seminar, 1792 consistorial councilor, 1804 senior consistorial councilor and member of the Berlin high school college. In 1807 he was brought to France as a hostage, but after his return in 1808 he was appointed a member of the imperial estates of the Kingdom of Westphalia , as well as Chancellor and Rector perpetuus of the University of Halle. He kept the position of chancellor under the Prussian government (1814), which appointed him a member of the consistory in Magdeburg in 1816.

His grave is in the town of Halle .

family

August Hermann Niemeyer was the great-grandson of August Hermann Francke , the founder of the Francke Foundations . His father was Johann Konrad Philipp Niemeyer (1711–1767), preacher, deacon and archdeacon adjunctus in Halle. The mother Auguste Sophie (1717–1763), b. Freylinghausen, was the daughter of the orphanage director Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen (1670–1739) and his wife Johanna Sophia Anastasia (1697–1771), b. Francke. He had a brother David Gottlieb Niemeyer , who was a pastor in Glaucha .

August Hermann Niemeyer married Agnes Wilhelmine von Köpken (born February 15, 1769) in Magdeburg on October 5, 1786, the daughter of the Magdeburg court advisor Friedrich von Köpken. His children included the physicians Wilhelm Hermann Niemeyer (1788–1840) and Karl Eduard Niemeyer (1792–1838), the lawyer Franz Anton Niemeyer (1790–1867) and the theologian Hermann Agathon Niemeyer (1802–1851). The garden architect Paul Viktor Niemeyer (1827–1901), the lawyer Herbert Pernice (1832–1875), the peat researcher Moritz Fleischer (1843–1927) and the physicians Richard Fleischer (1848–1909), Paul Niemeyer and Felix von Niemeyer were his grandsons .

The Evangelical Lutheran hymn book for worship in the city and the Duchy of Magdeburg from 1805 contains 15 hymns written by Niemeyer.

Known students

  • Friedrich Gotthelf Benjamin Schmieder (1770-1838) was a German who studied Protestant theology and was a philologist , author , schoolboy and from 1804 until his death rector of the Royal High School in Brieg .
  • Johann Christian Croneberg, also Ivan Jakovlevič Kroneberg (1788-1838) was a Russian-Ukrainian classical philologist of German descent. He attended the pedagogy in Halle (1800-1805) and was from 1819 to 1838 Professor of Classical Philology at the Russian Imperial University of Kharkov and Rector (1823-1829, 1833-1836) there, now in Ukraine .
  • Johann August Jacobs (1788–1829), philologist and university professor, followed Niemeyer after his resignation in 1820 as inspector of the pedagogical department and in 1828 after Niemeyer’s death as director of the Francke Foundations. Niemeyer left a lasting mark on his life.

Honors

In his hometown Halle (Saale) the Niemeyerstraße reminds of him today .
