August Erich Johann von Berger (born January 26, 1765 in Celle ; † August 4, 1850 in Hanover ) was a Hanoverian lieutenant general and envoy in Berlin .

Life

August was the eldest son of the Hanover government councilor Heinrich Albrecht von Berger (1731–1781) and his wife Ernestine, née von Schilden († 1806)

Career

Berger joined the “von Ahlefeld” infantry regiment of the Electorate of Hanover in 1780 and was promoted to captain and senior adjutant until mid-August 1794 . In 1799 he was appointed company commander. After the electorate had capitulated to Napoleon in the Artlenburg Convention in 1803 , he joined the King's German Legion . On January 18, 1806 he became a major in the 1st Line Battalion and on January 21, 1807 he was assigned to the 7th Line Battalion. He took part in the Battle of Talavera in 1809 and received the gold medal for it. Berger retired from military service on September 28, 1810 with a pension .

In the run-up to the Wars of Liberation , he set up the Lauenburg field battalion in the spring of 1813. In August he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and used as adjutant general to General Wallmoden . In 1814, when he was promoted to colonel, he was appointed commander of an infantry brigade. In 1815 he came to General Carl von Alten as Chief of Staff .

After the war, Berger became Major General of the Hanover Army and Chief of the 9th Infantry Regiment on December 12, 1818 . On April 1, 1831, he was transferred to the 3rd Infantry Brigade as commander and retired on March 24, 1836 as Lieutenant General. For his work, Berger had received the Guelph Order II. Class, the Waterloo Medal , the Russian Order of St. Vladimir IV. Class and the Order of St. Anne II. Class and the Hanseatic Medal 1813-1814 during his career .

He was then envoy in Berlin from 1838 to 1843. His successor was Ludwig von Kielmannsegge. Berger died on August 4, 1850 in Hanover.

Berger married Amalie von Döring (1768–1813) on March 14, 1793. The couple had several children:
