Emil Alexander August Ferdinand Ritter and Edler Herr von Berger (born June 4, 1813 in Bad Segeberg , † March 23, 1900 in Berlin ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

origin

He was the son of August von Berger (1765-1850) and his wife Amalie, born von Döring (1768-1813). His father was a Hanoverian lieutenant general and envoy in Berlin. His brother Ludwig Heinrich Georg (1799–1863) was also Lieutenant General and Commandant of Hanover from Hanover.

Military career

Berger attended a school in Holzminden and joined the 2nd Infantry Regiment of the Hanover Army on December 1, 1829 as an avantageur . There he was promoted to second lieutenant on April 4, 1830 . At the beginning of April 1839 he joined the Prussian Army and was employed in the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot . Promoted to prime lieutenant in mid-September 1843 , Berger first took part in the crackdown on street fighting in Berlin in 1848 , and then in the campaign against Denmark as an adjutant at the general command of the Schleswig Holstein troops . Here he was used in the battles near Schleswig, Düppel, Bau and Hadersleben . In 1849 he returned to the troop service as a company commander , became a captain and company commander in 1850, and rose as a major to battalion commander in 1858. While still as a lieutenant colonel , Berger was commissioned on May 19, 1863 with the command of the 8th Leib-Grenadier Regiment and was appointed commander on September 22, 1863 with the promotion to colonel .

In 1864 he took part with this association during the war against Denmark a . a. participated in the storm on the Düppeler Schanzen . Berger was wounded and for his services during this war with the order Pour le Mérite , the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class with swords and awarded the Order of the Iron Crown .

Two years later he commanded his regiment in the war against Austria and took part in the battles near Gitschin and Königgrätz . For this he received the Order of the Crown, 2nd Class with Swords. Following the war, Berger was assigned to command the 11th Infantry Brigade on October 30, 1866, with his regiment à la suite . On December 31, 1866, he was promoted to major general and appointed commander of this brigade . Released from this command on June 17, 1869, Berger then took over the 4th Guard Infantry Brigade . He led this in 1870/71 during the war against France in the battles at Gravelotte , Beaumont , Sedan , Le Bourget and the siege of Paris . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , Berger was promoted to Lieutenant General after the Peace of Frankfurt on August 18, 1871, and as such was in command of Hanover until March 13, 1874. He was then appointed governor of Ulm Fortress .

In recognition of his many years of service, Berger was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with Oak Leaves and Swords on the Ring on January 17, 1875. From his position as governor, he was released on May 17, 1876, under presentation of the character as General of Infantry with board for disposition made. The Bavarian King and the King of Württemberg honored his commitment on June 8, 1876 by being awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Military Merit and the Grand Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown with Swords.

Berger had married Emilie, widowed Countess Bruges, born von Zeuner (1813-1897) on February 26, 1851 in Peterwitz bei Jauer . From the marriage it emerged:
