The state election in Bremen in 2003 was the 16th election for citizenship in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen after the Second World War. It took place on May 25, 2003 .

Election campaign

In the election campaign, the SPD relied on Henning Scherf and posted Scherf on a bicycle, combined with the slogan "Bremen drives well with Henning Scherf". The coalition partner CDU showed six candidates on and behind a red sofa and the text "Vote strong women. CDU - A lot done. A lot to do." The Greens used a picture of an offshore wind turbine and the statement "We are investing in green spaces. Bremen needs a new coalition." The FDP posted a color composition. The upper two thirds of the poster were red (with the text "56 years Bremen has seen red"), the lower third yellow (with the text "Now is enough. Act bravely instead of talking nicely").

Result

The turnout was 61.3 percent.

The parties of the ruling grand coalition , SPD and CDU, lost both votes, but continued their alliance under Henning Scherf (SPD). The FDP and DVU were able to pass the five percent hurdle in the Bremerhaven elective area, but not in the Bremen elective area, and therefore each received a mandate. In contrast, the Schill party co-ruling in Hamburg failed because of the threshold clause, despite a higher overall share in both electoral areas.

For the SPD, the state election in Bremen was the only victory in a series of defeats in the 2003 state elections.
