Walloon Brabant ( French Brabant wallon , Dutch Waals-Brabant ? / I , Walloon Braibant walon ) is a province in the Wallonia region in Belgium . The capital is Wavre . Audio file / audio sample

Walloon Brabant was formed in the course of the federalization of Belgium from the French-speaking southern part of the province of Brabant .

In terms of area, Walloon Brabant is the smallest province in Belgium and the second smallest in terms of population. Only the province of Luxembourg has fewer inhabitants. Large parts of Walloon Brabant are characterized by unprecedented urban sprawl , which means that the actually independent, smaller agglomerations of La Hulpe , Wavre and Ottignies have now almost grown together. The region around Waterloo and Braine-l'Alleud is also sprawled and has now grown together with the Brussels metropolitan area .

The province consists of only one district (French arrondissement): The Nivelles district is thus congruent with the territory of the province.

In comparison with the gross domestic product of the European Union, expressed in purchasing power standards , the province achieved an index of 129 (EU-25: 100) in 2015, significantly higher than the Belgian average of 119. Walloon Brabant is the wealthiest province in the Wallonia region.

In 2017, the unemployment rate was 7.5%, slightly above the Belgian average.
