Railway stations in Baden-Württemberg

The Waghäusel train station is one of two stations in the Württemberg Baden- district town Waghäusel ; the second station is in the Wiesental district. The Waghaeusel station is a through station at kilometer 29.930 of from Mannheim via Hockenheim and Graben-Neudorf to Karlsruhe leading Rheinbahn on the timetable distance (KBS) 700th

The station is classified in station category  4 of DB Station & Service . It has three platform tracks and is only served by local trains operated by Deutsche Bahn AG (DB) .

location

Waghäusel train station borders on the southwestern edge of the Waghäusel district of the large district town of the same name, but, geographically speaking, lies within the boundaries of the Wiesental district. The train station is roughly halfway between Mannheim and Karlsruhe, so both cities can be reached in about the same time. There is an industrial area in the immediate vicinity of the train station, including a dm distribution center and the Schuler Waghäusel branch. The Hermitage on the former Südzucker site and the pilgrimage church are also within easy walking distance.

Due to its convenient and central location, the station is also used by many commuters from the surrounding cities and communities, such as Hambrücken and Oberhausen-Rheinhausen . The city of Philippsburg has its own train station, but there is no direct connection to Mannheim, so that it is easier for some commuters to drive from Waghäusel and avoid a change in Graben-Neudorf .

The address of the train station is Weinbrennerstraße 9 .

history

With the opening of the Mannheim - Schwetzingen - Hockenheim - Waghäusel - Graben-Neudorf - Eggenstein - Karlsruhe line of the Baden Rheinbahn on August 4, 1870, the Waghäusel station was opened. The building owner of the line and the station was the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways .

The station gained significant importance through the sugar factory of the "Badische Gesellschaft für Zuckerproduktion", which opened in 1838 on the site of today's Hermitage. The urgently needed siding was realized in 1870, so that many trains were on their way to Waghäusel every day with sugar beets. As a result, the sugar factory in Waghäusel became one of the largest employers in North Baden, which led to an economic boom in the region. In 1996, 158 years after the opening, the supervisory board of Südzucker AG , in which the Badische Gesellschaft für Zuckerproduktion had now merged, decided to close the Waghäusel site.

The many tracks are still partially available, so that a new connection for the enamel container manufacturer Pfaudler , which wants to settle on the Schuler SMG site by 2018, would also be possible.

In the course of the electrification of the Rheinbahn, Waghäusel station was electrified in 1958 .

In the 1970s, the station was moved a few hundred meters to the north.

Remodeling

From April 2017 to December 2018, the platforms will be brought up to the local S-Bahn standard and the equipment will be modernized as part of the integration of the Mannheim – Karlsruhe line into the network of the RheinNeckar S-Bahn. For this purpose, all platforms will be raised to 76 cm and three lifts will be installed: one to platform 1, one to the central platform platform 2/3 and one in the reception building.

In addition, the bus stop on the station forecourt will be redesigned. Since it is not possible to raise the sidewalk in front of the station building, new bus platforms will also be built.

As part of the renovation work, urgently needed additional parking spaces are to be set up. This happens u. a. by building up a ramp, which is becoming obsolete due to the newly installed elevators.

Reception building

In the reception building of the station Waghäusel, which is located on the east side of the station and for passengers is accessible only partially, there is a travel center of Deutsche Bahn AG and a kiosk. In May 2018 it was announced that Deutsche Bahn intends to sell the station building in 2019.

Track systems

Waghäusel station has three platform tracks on a side platform and an island platform . Track 1 on the side platform serves the trains in the direction of Karlsruhe , track 2 for those in the direction of Mannheim . According to the schedule, track 3 is only used by a few trains to get on and off, namely either by those that end in Waghäusel or have a longer stopover in Waghäusel. The platforms are not yet barrier-free .

Track 1 can be reached from the western parking lot at the same level. Tracks 2 and 3 on the island platform can only be reached through a pedestrian underpass .

Track 3 is on the island platform next to track 2. On the opposite side of the track is the former house platform and the reception building .

traffic

Regional traffic

The station is usually served every hour by regional trains on the RB 2 (( Biblis -) Mannheim Hbf - Karlsruhe Hbf ), which stops at all subway stations. In the weekday rush hour , this cycle is compressed to half an hour, sometimes even to a quarter of an hour. Some of these amplifiers end or begin here, but mostly in Graben-Neudorf . In addition, there are occasional regional express trains between Mannheim and Karlsruhe during rush hour , stopping at least in Graben-Neudorf, Waghäusel, Hockenheim and Schwetzingen .

line Route Clock frequency
RB2 Karlsruhe main station - Graben-Neudorf - Waghäusel - Hockenheim - Schwetzingen - Mannheim main station (- Mannheim-Waldhof - Lampertheim - Biblis ) Hourly / half-hourly

(Half-hourly service sometimes only to Graben-Neudorf)

RE2 Karlsruhe main station - Graben-Neudorf - Waghäusel - Hockenheim - Schwetzingen - Mannheim main station individual trains in rush hour

Some of the RE trains run from Mannheim to Ludwigshafen Hbf . Even after Graben-Neudorf, an RE does not continue in the direction of Karlsruhe, but via Bruchsal , Bretten and Mühlacker in the direction of Vaihingen and Stuttgart Hbf .

S-Bahn traffic

In 2015 and 2016 a train also ran as the S 33 towards Bruchsal from Mannheim via Schwetzingen to Waghäusel. The S 33 normally runs from Germersheim via Philippsburg and Graben-Neudorf to Bruchsal. This train, however, corresponded to a RE 2 from Mannheim Hbf to Graben-Neudorf, which from Graben-Neudorf continued on the regular route of the S 33 to Bruchsal (with all intermediate stops on this section).

For the time of construction work at Heidelberg main station in autumn 2018, a S-Bahn connection Heidelberg Hbf - Waghäusel (via Neu-Edingen / Friedrichsfeld , Schwetzingen and Hockenheim) was set up, as Heidelberg was cut off from long-distance traffic to Stuttgart. With the two pairs of trains running daily (morning and evening), which were formed from redesigned vehicles from the 425 series , travelers in Hockenheim could change to an IC , which made a replacement stop there. This connection was re-established in summer 2019 due to renewed construction work, the trains ran as S 61.

In December 2020, when all train stations and stops on the route have been rebuilt, the RB 2 will be added to the network of the RheinNeckar S-Bahn as the new S 8 line .

Freight transport

On the western side of the station, separated by the larger of the two P + R car parks, two electrified tracks run exclusively for freight traffic. This alternative route serves to relieve the passenger station, as it is sometimes heavily used with passenger trains, especially during rush hour on weekdays.

Until 1992, sugar beets were delivered to the nearby Waghäusel sugar factory via the train station .

Bus transport

Buses run from the station forecourt in the direction of Bruchsal , Oberhausen-Rheinhausen , Philippsburg , Altlußheim , Kronau and Bad Schönborn as well as to all parts of the city.

line Course of the journey
125 Kirrlach - Waghäusel - Wiesental - Hambrücken - Forst - Bruchsal - Karlsdorf - Spöck - Karlsruhe
128 Altlußheim - Rheinhausen - Oberhausen - Waghäusel
193 Bad Schönborn - Kronau - Kirrlach - Waghäusel - Wiesental - Philippsburg - Rheinsheim

The 193 bus connects to Bad Schönborn-Kronau train station and from there to the S 3 in the direction of Heidelberg.

Rates

Two transport associations meet at Waghäusel train station . The tariffs of the Karlsruher Verkehrsverbund (KVV) apply to journeys in the direction of Karlsruhe , the tariffs of the Rhein-Neckar transport association (VRN) apply to journeys in the direction of Mannheim . The VRN tariffs are also recognized on buses within the city area and on the Waghäusel – Wiesental section of the train. However, only KVV tickets are issued for journeys within the city.

Park

There are park and ride parking spaces on both sides of the train station , which are available for free use.
