The Wetter (Ruhr) station is a former train station and today's stop in the center of the city of Wetter (Ruhr) in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is served by regional trains and the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn .

history

The station is on the Elberfeld – Dortmund railway line and was opened on March 9, 1849 as a through station by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft .

Entrance building from 1905

The first station building, built in 1850, was demolished in 1905 by the Prussian State Railways and replaced by the building that still exists today.

On March 17, 1920, as part of the Ruhr uprising , fighting took place between units of the Red Ruhr Army and an advance guard of the Freikorps Lichtschlag , who had revealed themselves to be supporters of the Kapp Putsch . A plaque commemorates the events.

In 1988 the historic station building was added to Wetter's list of architectural monuments under number 89 . Since then it has been a listed building .

In 1994 the station was connected to the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn network, and the N33 local transport line was discontinued.

Today the station building is no longer used by the railway. Instead, the city library has been located here since 2007 . A restaurant followed in spring 2008.

Traffic importance

Today the S5 operated by the DB Regio NRW stops here every hour. In addition, the station is served every hour by the Ruhr-Lenne-Bahn , which is operated by Abellio Rail NRW . The Ruhr-Sieg-Express also stops every hour. This line was operated by DB Regio NRW until December 8, 2007 and since then by Abellio Rail NRW. The Wupper Express and long-distance trains run through. There is no freight traffic here in regular operation, as freight trains use the railway line on the other side of the Ruhr.

Structural conditions

From an operational point of view, it is now a stopping point, all switches and parking and loading tracks have been removed. There is a central platform between the two tracks, which can be reached via stairs and barrier-free via ramps.

outlook

The 2015 S-Bahn target network originally planned to build a threading in the direction of Witten behind the Wetter (Ruhr) stop in order to allow the S-Bahn to run from here to the other side of the Ruhr, where they reactivated on the way to Witten Central Station Stopping points Wetter-Wengern Ost and Witten-Bommern Höhe should serve. Wetter (Ruhr) would thus become a hub station. After Oliver Wittke took office as Transport Minister, all target agreements were overturned in 2005 and subjected to a reassessment. The necessary new Ruhr bridge was rejected, so that the S-Bahn will not change its course in the future.

It is also planned to upgrade the Ruhr-Lenne-Bahn to the S19 and to extend it beyond the previous end point to Bottrop Hbf or even Haltern am See. However, due to the cuts in regionalization funds for local rail transport, this goal has become a long way off. Realistically, nothing will change in the status quo for the foreseeable future.
