from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Baroque Orchestra of the European Union (officially European Union Baroque Orchestra , EUBO ) is an initiative of the European Union that enables young musicians from Europe to play in a baroque orchestra for six months under professional guidance in order to facilitate their entry into professional life .

history

The EUBO was founded in 1985, as part of the European Year of Music, to celebrate the 300th birthday of the composers Johann Sebastian Bach , Domenico Scarlatti and Georg Friedrich Händel .

The now around 600 EUBO musicians gave around 600 concerts in 51 countries. The baroque orchestra of the European Union performed in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw , in the Opéra-Comique in Paris, as well as at various festivals such as the Bachwoche Ansbach , the Musical Autumn in Darmstadt or the renowned festivals for " early music " in Utrecht , York or Ambronay . Outside of Europe, EUBO has played in Japan, the United States, Ramallah and the Gaza Strip, Botswana and Soweto.

The success of EUBO can be seen from the fact that former EUBO members now play in many well-known ensembles. Examples are the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra , Les Musiciens du Louvre , The English Concert , Europa Galante , The Academy of Ancient Music , La Petite Bande , The King's Consort , Concerto Copenhagen , Les Arts Florissants or Chursächsische Capelle Leipzig .

structure

The European Union Baroque Orchestra is a UK registered non-profit educational institution and is based in Wootton, a town near Woodstock . The members of the orchestra are selected every year. The auditions take place in the week after Easter and last three days. As a rule, around 100 students from all over Europe are invited, of which around 20 get a place in the orchestra. The average age of the musicians is around 24 years. The orchestra is on tour four to five times from July to December and is led by well-known and renowned baroque specialists such as Lars Ulrik Mortensen , Enrico Onofri , Roy Goodman , Petra Müllejans , Chiara Banchini , Christophe Coin , Margaret Faultless , Edward Higginbottom , Rachel Podger , Andrew Manze , Ton Koopman , Jaap ter Linden , Reinhard Goebel , Alfredo Bernardini , Paul Goodwin , Monica Huggett , Marc Minkowski or Christina Pluhar .

EUBO is largely financed by the European Commission; it is the EU's official cultural ambassador. The orchestra also has private sponsors and donors. From 2008 to 2017 EUBO was orchester en résidence in Echternach in the local cultural center Trifolion . From the 2018 season the EUBO Orchestra will prepare its autumn tour at the AMUZ in Antwerp.
