The company was founded in 1892 by the master baker Hermann D. Langness as a picking service and wholesaler for bakeries. In 1928 Langness merged with the wholesaler Paul Bartels to form Bartels-Langness AG. In addition, the company "Holsteinisches Nudel- und Makkaroniwerk GmbH" was founded, which was run under the company "Fritz Feldmann" from 1930 and in 2008 looked after 30 self-managed Markant supermarkets.

In 1944, the Bartels family left the company management and after real division took over the Lübeck canning factory "Paul Erasmi & Co. GmbH" (today Erasco ). In 1950 the wine importer “P. Schneekloth Sons ”. In 1954 "Bela" was one of the founders of the corporate group "A & O Zentralkontor GmbH" (today "your chain" / Frey & Kissel ), a forerunner of Markant AG .

In 1972 Paulsen and Hochfeld and Bartels-Langness GmbH founded the first city wholesale market in the state capital. A year later, the C&C market was opened on the site where the "CITTI-PARK Kiel" is today.

In 1974 the first famila department store was opened in Eutin . In 1982 "Bartels & Langness" was one of the founding members of the purchasing cooperation " BBB & R ", which today is one of the ten largest goods buyers in Germany as a subgroup under the umbrella of Markant AG.

Shortly after reunification in 1990, the group already owned 21 “famila” locations, as well as retail space in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that was acquired after reunification . Today there are 13 Famila department stores in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg . Bartels-Langness joined “May & Co.”, a Hamburg bakery wholesale company. In addition to Hamburg, this branch now also has warehouses in Hanover and Wittenhagen .

In 1995 a fresh store for dairy products and cheese was opened in Gleschendorf near Lübeck. Two years later, Bartels-Langness became a partner in the convenience store supplier MCS, which belongs to Markant AG (including delivery to more than 250 North German gas stations). In 1996, the Steiskal bakery chain from Kiel joined the group.

Since 1999 the group of companies has held a stake in the pet food discounter Das Futterhaus GmbH & Co. KG , which is partly based on franchising. On May 1, 2000, the Tengelmann Group acquired 25 “Magnet” stores in northern Germany and renamed “famila” or “Markant” by 2002. In 2001 Bartels-Langness joined the "Logipet wholesale company for pet supplies". In addition, together with the “Citti” group (corporate group “Chefs Culinar”) and “co op”, “BCC GmbH & Co. KG” was founded as a joint venture for the purchase of electricity, district heating, heating oil and water. In the same year, Bartels-Langness was also a co-founder of the “ZOOkonzept GmbH & Co. KG” trade cooperation for the pet market (the companies involved are, in addition to Bartels-Langness: Das Futterhaus, Logipet and Sagaflor ).

In April 2002, 10 “Magnet” department stores were renamed “famila”. In the same year, a nationwide unique model, a training course for the so-called famila business clerk was launched. In 2004 the three Spar stores Eurospar Flensburg, Intermarché Wedel and Intermarché Mölln were taken over and converted into famila stores; in addition, the sale of event tickets via CTS was introduced. In 2006 the 80th famila department store was opened in Kiel-Neumeimersdorf and in 2007 the 81st in Buchholz.

In 2011 famila took over two more stores from Ratio GmbH & Co KG in Löhne / Gohfeld and Bielefeld. The location in Löhne was closed again two years later.

In 2016, Bartels-Langness took over a total of 10 locations from coop and REWE in the course of the takeover of the coop retail locations in Schleswig-Holstein by REWE due to competition law concerns of the cartel office. Three of them were renamed to famila (Husum, Nauen, Ludwigslust), 6 to Markant and one to “nah & frisch”. In 2018, two new famila department stores opened in Celle with Bartels-Langness as the owner of the “AllerCenter” shopping center at the former location of a real department store and Stade.

With the takeover of the trademark "TiP" (great in price) by ZHG, which is part of the Markant group , the famila department stores and Markant stores gradually changed various FMCGs to the new brand for the retail company in the course of the first half of 2019 . “TiP” was previously known as real's entry-level brand. In 2017, Bela had merged with various retail companies, including real, to form the Retail Trade Group .
