European basketball championship 2009 / qualification
This page describes the qualification for the 2009 European Basketball Championship for men. A total of 32 national teams took part in the qualification for the 8 free places. As part of the qualification for the 2009 European Basketball Championship, the qualification system introduced in 2005 was continued. The teams played in a division A and a division B again . In Division A, the stronger teams played for qualification for the European Championship.
mode
A total of 16 teams took part in the tournament, which qualified for the tournament in different ways:
- Poland was automatically selected as the host.
- The seven best national teams of the 2007 European Basketball Championship were directly qualified for the EuroBasket 2009. In order of placement, these were: Russia , Spain , Lithuania , Greece , Germany , Croatia and Slovenia .
- The other eight participants were determined in a qualifying round again in a Division A and Division B was discharged. These were Serbia (winner group A), Macedonia (winner group B), Turkey (winner group C), Great Britain (winner group D), Bulgaria (second group A), Latvia (second group B), Israel (second group D) and France (second qualifying round winners).
Division A
Qualifying Round
In the qualifying round, 17 teams were drawn in three groups of four teams and one group of five teams. The first and the three best second of the four groups qualify for the final tournament.

Additional Qualifying Round Games
In the additional qualifying round, the six teams that have not yet qualified and were not bottom of the group play in two groups of three teams. The first placed of the two groups qualify for the final round of the additional qualifying round. The last European Championship participant was played there. The four bottom of the group played in a group of four to remain in Division A for qualifying for the 2011 European Championship .

Final round of the additional qualifying round (play-off games)
In the final round of the additional qualifying round, the top two of the additional qualifying round will play for qualification for the European Championship finals. Only the winner of this round qualified as the last team.

This made France the 16th and last team to qualify for the final tournament.
Relegation Tournament
In the relegation round, the last four placed in the first qualifying round play to remain in division A. Only the first two of this round also play in the qualification for the basketball European championship 2011 in the top division. There the Hungarian and Ukrainian national teams were able to secure their place in Division A. The Czech Republic and Estonia will only play in Division B in qualifying for the European Championship 2011
Division B
In Division B , the Georgian and the Montenegrin team were able to achieve promotion to Division A.
