Basket Zaragoza 2002 , also known under the sponsor name CAI Zaragoza , is a Spanish basketball club from the Aragonese capital, Saragossa . The first team plays in the Spanish ACB league . The home games are played in the 10,744-seat Pabellón Príncipe Felipe .

history

The Club Basket Zaragoza 2002 was founded in 2002 with the purpose of taking over from the traditional club CB Zaragoza , which played in the first division from 1981 to 1996 and was able to celebrate both nationally and internationally, but due to financial problems withdrew from professional gaming.

Immediately after its founding, the new club, which, like its predecessor club, appears under the sponsorship name CAI Zaragoza , acquired the license to compete in the Liga Española de Baloncesto (LEB), the second Spanish division. In a turbulent first season in 2002/03, the team only escaped relegation in the relegation play-off. As a result, they established themselves in the top field of the second division, but failed four times in a row in the promotion play-off. The 2007/08 season ended CAI Zaragoza as champions of the LEB and thus achieved the long-awaited promotion to the ACB league. The first season in the top division, however, the club only finished 17th and penultimate rank and had to relegate again. As early as 2009/10, the team was able to complete the second league as champions again and thus started in the ACB league from 2010/11.

The club achieved their first success in the first division in 2012/13. CAI Saragossa finished the regular round in 5th place and prevailed in the playoff for the championship in the quarter-finals with 2-1 against Valencia Basket Club . Only in the semi-finals did the team lose 3-0 to eventual champions Real Madrid . CAI Saragossa thus qualified for the first time for an international competition, the Eurocup 2013/14 .
