Bernhard Hombach

Bernhard Hombach , Spanish Bernardo Hombach Lütkermeier , (born September 12, 1933 in Krefeld ) is emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Granada in Nicaragua .

Life

Hombach grew up in Hohenhain near Freudenberg . He first attended the municipal high school in Olpe , before he switched to the religious school of the White Fathers in Rietberg at the age of 15 , where he passed his Abitur. He then studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven . Here he was ordained a priest in 1961 .

After a short pastoral activity as vicar in Ickern ( Castrop-Rauxel ) and as Spanish pastor in Siegen and Dahlbruch , he went to Argentina . Because of the uncertain political situation there, he left the country and then worked in Peru , Colombia , Nigeria and Venezuela . In 1987 he moved to Nicaragua , where he first worked as a pastor in Juigalpa and was later appointed vicar general of the diocese. For several years he also worked here as a diocesan administrator .

From 1992 to 1995, Hombach was director of Caritas in Nicaragua. One focus of his work was an extensive literacy program. For his commitment, the German Ambassador Helmut Schöps presented him with the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 1994 in Managua and in 2016 the Ambassador Ute König the Cross of Merit 1st Class.

In 1995 Pope John Paul II appointed him third bishop of the Juigalpa diocese . He was ordained bishop on April 22, 1995 in Juigalpa by the then Archbishop of Managua, Miguel Cardinal Obando Bravo SDB ; Co-consecrators were Paderborn Archbishop Johannes Joachim Degenhardt and César Bosco Vivas Robelo , Bishop of León in Nicaragua.

On December 15, 2003 he was appointed fifth bishop of the diocese of Granada and took over the diocese on February 7, 2004. Since 2002, Hombach has been President of Caritas of Nicaragua; since 2005 he has also been Vice-President of the Bishops' Conference of Nicaragua (CEN).

In September 2008 he rejected a general amnesty for the former presidents Arnoldo Alemán and Enrique Bolaños Geyer and the former minister Eduardo Montealegre because of irregularities in their terms of office from 2002 to 2007; he asked for legal clarification.

On April 11, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation. His successor was Jorge Solórzano Pérez , until then Bishop of Matagalpa.
