Bernhard Adolf Erwin Hermann Hans Wördehoff (born January 31, 1929 in Hamburg ; † September 26, 2002 ) was a German journalist .

Live and act

Wördehoff was born in Hamburg in 1929 as the son of a businessman . He attended high schools in Hamburg, Reichenberg in the Sudetenland (today's Liberec ) and Heide (Holstein) . After graduating from high school in 1948, he did an apprenticeship as a publishing bookseller until 1950 . From 1950 to 1953 he was employed by the Rudolf Müller publishing company, after which he was head of the Charles Coleman book and magazine publisher from 1953 to 1960 . In the last few years, from 1958 to 1960, the advertising advice of the Lübecker Nachrichten published there was part of it. In 1960 he switched to the daily newspaper Die Welt as an editor , after having worked as a part-time journalist since 1955. 1966 followed a year with the Deutsches Allgemeine Sonntagsblatt . Finally he changed the medium and in 1967 went to Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) as an editor . There he took over the post in 1969 as deputy editor-in-chief specializing in foreign and security policy . In October 1975, Wördehoff was appointed as the successor to retiring Stephan G. Thomas as the new director and editor-in-chief of the current program department of Deutschlandfunk (DLF), with effect from January 1, 1976 , which was associated with the work of political reporting. A return to the NDR as director of the Funkhaus Hamburg, planned for 1981, failed due to differences over competencies in questions of programming. Instead, he remained in the service of Deutschlandfunk as director and editor-in-chief until June 30, 1986. The fact that Wördehoff, who was characterized by the Stuttgarter Zeitung as “one of the truly independent journalists in the republic”, had to resign on this date was primarily due to the strong political pressure from the Bonn government coalition under Helmut Kohl and its right wing.

As a result, Wördehoff worked as a freelance author. He wrote several books and made numerous contributions, especially essays and features on the history of the 19th and 20th centuries (for Die Zeit , but also for other German-language publications and for broadcasters). He became known to a wide audience through his appearances in the international morning pint with Werner Höfer on the ARD's Sunday morning television program .

Wördehoff, from 1989 co-founder and board member of the Herbert and Elsbeth Weichmann Foundation , Hamburg, which promotes scientific research into the democratic anti-Hitler opposition in exile , was married to Hildegard, née Hahnefeld, since 1956. The couple had no children.
