The BEUTH locomotive with serial number 24, designed by August Borsig in 1844, is considered the first steam locomotive developed independently in Germany . Before that, Borsig built locomotives based on American models. The locomotive won a race against a Stephenson model by about ten minutes and was considered a prototype of fast German locomotive designs for the next ten years . A driven axle and two running axles as well as a standing tank ensured comparatively high speeds . It got its name after the head of the Prussian trade academy Christian Peter Wilhelm Beuth , who prophesied August Borsig that nothing would ever come of him. A replica of the locomotive is exhibited today in the German Museum of Technology in Berlin .

Design features

Right cylinder of the replica from 1912

The Beuth has larger cylinders on the outside of the eagle . This made it possible to dispense with an elaborate bolster axle . The drive rods of the cylinders act directly on the drive wheel set in the middle via eccentric pins pressed into the wheel spiders . This means that the drive pins and drive rod bearings with the highest shear forces are more easily accessible for greasing and checking. The higher steam consumption of the drive required a more powerful and larger steam boiler in the form of a long and a standing boiler with a high steam dome . This dome-like standing kettle is typical of all early Borsig constructions such as the Borsig and the Borussia that followed the Beuth . The rear wheel set under the Beuth's open driver's cab also appears in many later designs. The Beuth is now actually the first in series produced steam locomotive with classic features as found in nearly all later constructions use worldwide.

Manufacturing and use

The Beuth was shown at the Berlin industrial exhibition in 1844 and then used by the Berlin-Anhalt Railway . This type of construction has already been produced in a kind of series in a total of 71 copies and has been used throughout northern Germany. The further development of the Beuth von Borsig went as Borussia from 1844 z. B. in operation on the Cologne-Minden Railway ; other manufacturers at that time took the Beuth as a model.

Replica

The locomotive was scrapped after it was retired. The replica, which can be seen today in the exhibition of the museum, was reconstructed in great detail in 1912 . In 2010 the replica was presented in the special exhibition "Adler, Rocket and Co." in the Transport Museum in Nuremberg .
